I can't believe I wanted to go there. On another note, no protests ever occurred at the college I went to.

Why are they even doing this? Sexual frustration? Misunderstood politics?

Did some professor take away their iPhone?

You know what would impress me. If these schmucks would occupy an NYU economics class and declare war against all the greedy neo-liberal supply-side scumbags that university churns out. I attended a lecture at NYU where a CEO alum discussed to a roomful of future MBAs how his satellite television company realized there was a market for cable teevee in Venezuelan slums because the security situation is so bad there people were too afraid to go out at night -- so they were pooling money together to buy subscriptions to keep themselves entertained in their shanties. The lesson was that this company assumed only the rich in Caracas could afford cable. They changed their strategy to market to scared poor people to fill a need of the market.

Something about that sent shivers down my spine all the way down to my liberal ass. NYU produces people like this in its economic department, as far as I can tell.

@politecough: True. What bothers me more is the way these MBA types look the other way (the whole Chavez is a Huey Long dictator, but they're fine going in to do business) in order to make a buck. These are the same people that would have no problem partnering up with, say, Saudi companies that discriminate against women if it means they'll make money.

It's the whole "throw democratic ideals out the window if it means making money" thing that chills me.

@somedayarealrainwillcome: You don't make countries any more democratic and safe if you're willing to become business partners with dictators. Nobody sells anything in Venezuela without paying their pound of flesh to the government. This is a fundamental flaw of free-market supply side ideology -- doing business with Hugo Chavez and other despots keeps them in power. The argument that free markets = democracy is bollocks.

@gawkimo: Oh, I misunderstood your point. I agree with you on doing business with despots, but in your first comment, you seem to only be implying that the businessman was evil because he recognized the need for poor people under duress to have entertainment. As far as his motives go, sheisty as all hell, but nothing really gets accomplished solely for altruistic purposes, and I'm sure the Venezuelan poors could care less about his motives as long as they get to watch their telenovelas.

We found an opportunity in a state of insecurity!" but I agree that it really doesn't matter whether they're marketing to the rich or the poor with regards to my main point of contention.

I certainly don't want to deprive the Venezuelan shanties of their telenovelas or Bulimic beauty pageants. (Insert emoticon here.)

Hey. Idiots. NYU funds clubs. Make a "Relief for Gazan Refugees" club. Get your 1-2 thousand dollars from the administration and organize some events. Have a fundraiser. A documentary screening. Create a petition. Do something, you know, somewhat constructive and not so blantantly cliche and egotistical.

Last I checked NYU isn't run by either the IDF or Hamas, and their stir fry chicken line has very little to do with the middle east peace process.

Putting one’s money where one’s mouth is would, it seems to me, involve actually going to Gaza to assist in the rebuilding. If that is too arduous, why not show solidarity with their comrades in arms by attending a non-Israeli university in the region? Of course, any place but secular Israel could be a serious cramp on the style of the typical American university student.

@sergegainsbourg: Are you illiterate? I am suggesting they go and help rebuild. I know students that actually did that in Lebanon, and I think these knuckleheads need to do that, instead of occupying a cafeteria.

It’s true, I am also making fun of their probable idealization of the semitic other. In most places in the Middle East, they’d have a hard time fitting in. As young American libertines, whatever their sympathies, they’d be most at home in Tel Aviv, not Damascus.

Universities in Muslim or predominantly Muslim states do not deserve to be destroyed. They should be supported. Academics in countries like Egypt and Syria have it hard enough. Also, I am still idealistic enough to believe in the value of intellectual exchange toward achieving peace.

@iplaudius: Props to intellectual exchange. I do like their scholarships idea. That seems like it has the potential to be a meaningful campus cause.

Also if they learned how to use a hammer by doing some rebuilding work in Gaza, they could build better barricades next time.
