As an ex-Vegas resident, I can say that, for the locals, this doesn't even register.
String-bikini-clad 5'10" (h)looker in 4"+ heels getting gas at the local Stop-N-Rob? Catches your eye the first time, but otherwise, meh.
The driving exhibited by visitors is already so bad, between being in a strange town with shiny objects and glittery lights, it may actually make traffic safer by slowing it to a crawl. They've gotta hurry up and give as much money away before the departing flight! #lasvegas
I really, REALLY want these strippermobile girls to get their own tv show where they drive around the country, stripping and playing rock music and solving mysteries. Who's with me? #lasvegas
This doesn't just happen in Las Vegas. I saw a pickup truck (yes, a little more "low-rent") driving down Douglas St. in Victoria, BC, with a bunch of (fully) nude women in the back handing out business cards. Call me a moralistic prude, but I was kind of grossed out. #lasvegas
I might as well stick my nose in here. Most are there because they have an 8th grade education, and they feel it's better than waitressing or clerking for minimum wage.
I'm not being snobbish; it's what I've been told by those who did it. One model for our studio/workshop, does it because she did not finish high school, and her regular job pays min. wage. She gets $100/hr for nude modeling, and has the figure for it.
When I was in college, our class hired a nude model. One classmate complained to me "men don't have to take their clothes off." When I told my mother she said "men don't have anything to show off."
If I were female and had that figure, I'd take my clothes off for $100/hr, too.
It's been going on since the beginning of civilization. #lasvegas
@misha trotsky: The pay may be good, but I hope these models have enough financial skills to save or invest whatever they're earning today or be able to find an exit strategy (e.g., marry well). I'm not trying to be moralistic about what kinds of jobs women should take, but that income stream is tied to an constantly-depreciating asset.
@Claire Buoyant: Absolutely. I said that to my wife: none are preparing for when they turn 40, and their looks fade.
One who modeled nude for us, told me she was once a call girl, and another tog told me she was a petty thief. He found out when he tried to help her out into something different, and she stole some equipment from him. #lasvegas
@misha trotsky: I don't think there is any question about why these women are doing the stripping. And really, is Gawker the place to debate ANYONE's life choices? #lasvegas
This is an attempt by the Deja Vu GM to get attention since the club is turning to garbage. That's about all it's doing too, as the club has been no busier since this poor attempt at promotion started.
@misha trotsky: I'd like to say that your comment is ignorant and couldn't be farther from the truth. I've been a "regular" at both Deja Vu and Little Darlings for years now, and most of the girls are incredibly intelligent! The idea that they're all dropouts with no education is very wrong; however, the stereotypes that they dance to pay their way through college and/or are single mothers supporting their kids hold the most truth. While it may not be our ideal career, the economy here is one of the worst in our country, and it's fast money (from ~$200-1200/night) for them.
The girl interviewed happens to be a good friend of mine (dancer name: Kay at Deja Vu), and she doesn't fit any of the stereotypes. She isn't a poor single mom stripping to pay her way through college, support a drug habit, or save up for that new Louis Vuitton bag. She's a very intelligent & stable woman who just enjoys dancing nude for a few extra dollars on the side.
Pay a visit to one of these clubs and see for yourself that it's not nearly as bad as you think it is. #lasvegas
@Magister: I think I'm willing to make an exception to the stripper pole being lame if it's installed in a moving vehicle rolling down the strip in Vegas.
Well, it's still lame, but cheers for innovation and creativity. #lasvegas
@SpyMagician: VERY nice! lol, i had a friend who would say after EVERY trip to the strip club: "Dude, I REALLY think she was into me!" We would just shake our heads and eat our White Castle. #lasvegas
I am sorry, but if you're going to strip while on bitumen, the law should require that your headlights be larger than those of the vehicle carrying you.
@If_I_Had_a_Poodle: Then you've clearly never spent 48 hours doing cocaine, drinking and gambling while taking your breaks at strip clubs. In which case, I pity you. #lasvegas
@If_I_Had_a_Poodle: You haven't lived until you've pondered both your own existence in the universe and how exactly she does that while simultaneously being unable to calculate the actual monetary value of plastic chips with dollar amounts printed on them. #lasvegas
