After masochistically clicking on Nick Douglas' infamous post about the U.S. soldier throwing a puppy off a cliff (I'm not linking to it, search for it if you must), I really, seriously should have known better than to click on this post/comment thread.

If you're going to smoke 6,000 camels, best do it with a 20mm cannon.

herd the camels about nine miles (15 kilometers) outside of town next week, where they will be shot and their carcasses left to decay in the desert.

In a couple of million years, paleontologists will discover this stash of bones and construct an alternate history of Australia.

    Could be worse.

    The camels could be smokers.

Why are they going to let them rot?

Camel meat is supposed to be fairly decent and if you are going to shoot a bunch of camels shouldn't you at least feed people as part of the bargain?

@drunkexpatwriter: See, my first thought was... leather jackets?

I wonder if there is some sort of wildlife disease concern here re: eating camels, particularly since they have been behaving crazily, ransacking town and whatnot. Similar to the US/Canada/UK big ol' cooperative panic re: Mad Cow?

Either way, rotting seems like a bad solution for any towns downwind of the killing fields of purifying and/or dessicating camel carcases.

@KikiCanuck: The chance of the rotting animals spreading disease also seems fairly high.

Though, it will be like Thanksgiving and Christmas wrapped up in one for vultures.

@drunkexpatwriter: Camel meat is actually pretty good, if a bit gamey. I had some in Alice Springs about ten years ago. Unfortunately, I did not get to shoot it from a helicopter.

Why are these fellows "strapping"? How did fellows get to be called "strapping" at all? Blame it on Burns? Originally it was meant for women, "big and bouncy." How were straps involved?

@Uncle_Billy_Slumming: The death of 6,000 brains. Is it ok when they are not called human?

This is what I originally wanted to write. But then I realized I was not a member of PETA. There really is no way to explain how being "inconvenienced" should result in...well? What can we call it when we take living beings and destroy their futures because they annoy us?

No other reason than they annoy us?

@Uncle_Billy_Slumming: The etymology comes from "strappers", slang for Victorian age explorers (all of whom were assumed to have massive schlongs, due to their bravery). It was assumed that they had to strap their packages to their thighs, lest it get in their way while exploring lands inhabited by savage natives.

I can't even bare (bear??) the thought that ants with little nervous systems die when I walk around oblivious. On the other hand I ate a bird yesterday. Cognitive dissonance -- it's what's for dinner.

I think that Star Trek needs to reinvent Gene Roddenberry's fondness for character names out of ancient Greek and Roman mythology. That would be rad for these times.

As long as there's Pinto, lots of simmering homoerotic angst and plenty of Quinto in various states of undress and/or states of rage, they can make it about how they get the figs in the fig rolls
