As an Italian American in California, I actually had to wikipedia the word 'guido.' But the whole thing (including gawker's liberal use of what seems to be a slur) seems quite racist. If MTV made a reality TV show about another ethnic group and filled said reality TV show with the worst possible stereotypes of said ethnic group, it would draw major criticism rather than laughter.
@kdonovan94001: Yup. I'm an Italian-American from Jersey, and I did a Bea Arthur spit-take when I heard the VO in the promo: "...hottest, tannest, craziest guidos on the Jersey Shore."
Can you imagine if MTV did a show and the VO said "the hottest, drunkest, craziest polacks in Greenpoint"? That's about the equivalent. "Guido" is no "n-word", but it's definitely an ethnic slur, and a shitty thing to call someone.
@La Madrugada: (To your earlier comment), I never equated "guido" with a word like "polack". I equate more violent slurs like "w$p" to ethnic insults with the same kind of threat behind them.
I've always heard "guido" to be more the equivalent of "redneck".
According to the Jersey Shore Nickname Generator, Foster Kamer = Stevie Mortadella, which is also one of Domino's most popular pizza toppings in Joisey. Spooky.
Aside from the delightful art design of the house that was deemed "classy" by the inhabitants, I really didn't think Jersey Shore was as funny as the trailer lead me to believe it was going to be. Oh well, maybe next week there'll be another communicable disease.
@D2theMatthews: I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought that. Seriously, the commentary was vastly more entertaining that the show. I couldn't even finish an entire episode.
Don't forget that Dominos once had employees that posted youtube videos of them spitting in food or rubbing stuff on their genitals before using it to cook food. Give me oranged, muscle/roided hair gelled fools with big breasted hangers on in a jacuzzi over nasty Dominos food any day.
