The exact same thing could be said about Bill Clinton, who started in with Monica in late 1995, during the very moment of his budget standoff with Newt Gingrich and the government shutdown (that's why interns were hanging out by the Oval Office), while he was furiously raising money for his reelection through questionable means like White House coffees and Lincoln Bedroom sleepovers. Monica was of the belief that he didn't even know her name till their third time together, and Clinton later testified that he knew she would eventually blab, it was in her nature. What if she'd talked in 1996 at the height of the campaign and it had come out then, instead of early 1998? I'll hate on the phony, oily Edwards like the rest of them, but no one is noticing that what Clinton did was much riskier: Edwards was a longshot to begin with, while Clinton threatened the collapse of his reelection campaign and an entire incumbent administration.
I have a headache from rolling my eyes about this story (I like to think I am rolling them just like Cokie Roberts did when Snufalufagus told the story on the air this morning).
So, let me get this straight. His "inner circle" works for months, if not years, for Edwards - jeopardizing their reputations if he proved to be an adulterer, and agreeing to sabotage all the work they had done, all the while knowing he has had an affair and is un-electable. Riiiight.
Here I was thinking the truth was "yeah, we knew about Rielle, but he was paying damn good money. So, please no subpoenas as to what did we know, and when did we know it".
I think it's actually very cool. I shutter (yeah I know it's shudder) to think what would have happened if John Edwards had landed on a ticket. Actually I think it was a total possibility--and we might be talking about McCain/Palin's first 100 days because of it.

Geez, they started up in 1995? Somehow I completely missed that in all the reportage I read.
