the problem is this whole campaign is no longer radical. the lies have been exposed, the science of addiction has been made public, laws against smoking have been passed. They need to move on to something not so widely accepted if they are going to justify using such in your face methods. To do something like this when everyone KNOWS what big tobacco did and how smoking is bad for you seems like a desperate attempt for attention. It's like organizing a protest against George Bush on Obama's White House lawn.

My dad smoked three packs a day. That is sixty cigarettes a day. He quit about 13 years ago and says he still misses it.

@kathotdog: And that is the whole point! It's YOUR choice, not anyone elses. You aren't stuffing lit cigarettes down childrens' throats (at least I hope you're not) and all these commercials act like we smokers are actually doing that.

@apocalypse-nowish: Ok, ok. In the US, you smokers are relatively benign because the laws work. The dork-squad is annoying because they've already won the war, now they're just raping and pillaging. But in 3rd World countries, like Germany, it's a different story. *Sigh* Foreign countries really could use more self-righteous American health nuts...

@Chileno: Hahaha, I have a picture from Vietnam of a guy in a hospital smoking right under a "No Smoking" sign, in the maternity ward. So, yeah, I agree it's hard not to feel like American nonsmokers have it pretty good at this point, while the rest of the world's nonsmokers could probably use a little more of the money wasted on this shite advertising to help them out (at least in the hospitals, for god's sake).

The reason you don't know people addicted to gummi bears is because gummi bears are a gateway candy. Kids experiment with the gummi bears and quickly move onto the stronger candies, like the addictive sour candies or even the dangerous pixi stix addiction.

I really, really hate these people. Trying to keep kids from smoking by using the same half-truth-soaked-false-advertising bullshit that the the tobacco companies did only perpetuates the problems. It's the war on drugs bullshit over and over again. You hit kids over the head with what is observably bullshit hyperbole, they just stop listening. Even to good advice. And yeah, I smoke. Another DARE success.

@allyzay: well specifically that ad, right? I mean the ad has no actual content except for a quote from a tobacco company spokesman, which is probably documented somewhere. It's got no statistics or claims... So I don't see how this ad could be "half-true".

@MyNameIsChris: No, I think if you look at those ads you'll find they actually very carefully don't say that smoking WILL give you lung cancer, but like the warning labels say "smoking increases the risk of you getting lung cancer". or somesuch.

I found that quite enlightening, having not been aware of the grave threat of Gummi Bears before. I mean, I noticed that my debntist had bought a yacht, but I was not smart enough to pinpoint Gummi Bears as the cause. Now I, too, have an asterisk over my head.
