Rushkoff does seem to be thinking big and asking an important question, though.

It's infuriating to be lectured on the virtues of modest living when you've never lived large.
The main lesson of the Recession for me is that money matters (If you're a basically decent person, you will strive to maintain your decency no matter how much money you have).
If a bright, poor, minority kid came to me and asked, 'Should I do public interest work or try to make a lot of money in the business world,' I'd say that unless public interest is the only thing you can see yourself doing, try to make money.
Money gives you power, including apparently, the power to condescend to others regardless of your actual intelligence and wisdom.

We are part owners in a bunch of multi family homes in an urban area of CT. Our tenants are hardworking, lovely folks that would be considered middle to low-middle income level. Prior to last year, 80% of our units have flat screen plasma tvs north of 60", satellite tv, shiny new computers, etc. They may not have a couch but they did have those electronics. That has changed in one years time.
I for one, think this recession has brought people of all financial backgrounds to appreciate simpler, more genuine things in life. It is the one silver lining in this nasty rain cloud.

What about the standards of a pantry that isn't empty? What about the standards of being able to take your cat to the vet?
I'm thinking that selling segments on a commercial TV show that does paid features isn't so bad after all, and I'm going to get that cover letter and resume into the mail tonight.
Yes, after two years of cutbacks and reduced income, I am indeed re-evaluating my values. Thanks Chris!
