I challenge you to come out of anonymity and to reveal who you are and what exactly makes you an arbiter of artistic taste. Drue has a list of achievements that few artists her age can match, and people from Grammy winner Wynton Marsalis to the late 49ers coach Bill Walsh respect her talent [www.drue.net] . Drue has raised thousands through her art for many causes. What have you done?
BTW, if any of you ever strikes it rich in the Valley-- highly unlikely, if you spend your work hours reading/commenting on ValleyWag-- don't invest your money in art. It really is not your forte & you'll go bankrupt.
@Snugbug: Thanks Snugbug. While I strongly disagree with your assessment of Drue's art, you have balls.
@"Michael Arrington": You are NOT Michael Arrington. Just received a response from the real Michael Arrington confirming you are an impersonator. It is outrageous that ValleyWag has allowed your fake comments to go on for so long: I can see comments from you dating from March 08, including "masterpieces" like:
"What the hell, I expected a better picture with this post" (with regard to a child porn post)
"I play the role of an 1800s steamboat captain in my illicit sex videos" (on a post about a Nazi-inspired sex video), etc.
Get a life, jerk!
Regards,
Svetlozar #druekataoka

Hmmmm. I wonder how I’d look in pancake makeup and a Veronica Lake.

Bennett is totes adorable but this is the last time I let anything with a penis use my MixMaster. Keith is going to have to work on his pizza dough pre-doorbell buzz. There are only so many hours in the day I like to clean my ceiling.

Dammit, I knew I shouldn’t have let Julia borrow my boa for her "Dress as a MediaBistro Bimbo" theme party. It came back soaked in Triple Crown rum. Plus I think she tore off the little feathery bit at the end on one of her tit tassels. #druekataoka

I'm not going to claim that Kataoka comes across as a great contemporary art luminary, but the amount of venom sprayed at her on this thread by vile vipers that have crawled from under untold rocks irritates me.
The comparison to Julia Allison also irritates me, because it's facile and unwarranted except on a completely surface level.
Kataoka stated down-thread that the work she's auctioning off for a collaborative project was inspired by her father passing away, and THEN the "ugly," "unattractive," "shticky" comments really kicked in. That also irritates me.
Peace. #druekataoka

"Snugbug is being mean to me about my being mean about, um, oh, forget it."
Just to clarify, Emily is the intended butt of this joke, not Drue, who I have nothing against. The point, such as it is, is that Emily, seeing a degree of notoriety gained by a girl with a vintage look would idly wonder what would happen if she herself sported a vintage look. You're right--too insidery. And probably too likely, but hey.
I was not comparing anyone to Julia, but then my posting history should show that even if I was it's no big deal. I don't have a problem with Julia. She pretty much does what it says on her label (i.e., MAY CONTAIN NUTS) #druekataoka

Samasource is an organization that gives computer based work to women, youth, and refugees living in third world countries.
The piece of art that I am auctioning for Samasource is a conceptual piece that celebrates the human spirit & was inspired by the recent passing of my dad from cancer. Consequently, I am upset by your inappropriate jokes-- though I do understand that's what you get paid for.
By the way you made a typo--- you're missing the word "art" in the first paragraph.

For anyone interested, basically just start reading D.T. Suzuki and never ever stop. That should be a genuine place to start.
Also, for anyone interested, I found a really lovely sumi-e flickr page a while back from a really talented artist. I'm not slagging Drue, she does her thing and that's great. But I don't like her work very much.

To me, Zen is a "STFU, stop believing, stop thinking, stop judging, stop acting, stop, stop, JUST STOP!" kind of ideological plan. At first it seems like it TAKES everything away from you, but if you go along with it, it actually gives you the world. =)

I guess Zen can be seen as a positive force. But it always seemed to me to be fairly amoral actually. It embraced life as nature, with human morality maybe secondary? I mean, that's why it was so fervently embraced by the Samurai caste. It gave them a path to shed their fear of dying, thus making them great swordsmen, and let them also shed their reluctance to kill, thus making them unbeatable swordsmen.

That girl is definitely, um, special. I can't believe you actually wrote that many words about her.
