I had always thought Duane Reed were just two schmucks that started a drug store in the 1800s, until I came upon the intersection of Duane and Reed in the financial district, to which I had said out loud to myself: "Oh."
@The Cajun Boy: No. DR is a local drug store and only in the NYC metro area. Maybe the holding company has an investment in a chain very similar to DR?
@afterabe: I didn't want this to turn into one of those burning, emotional Gawker debates like we have about abortion or gun control so I did a bit of research.
If you go to www.duanereade.com
there is a link that says "Uniquely New York Since 1960." When I tried to put the zip codes from other states the search engine just stared at me blankly. However, there are some Duane Reades in New Jersey. So, I don't know if the Duane Read people meant "Uniquely Greater New York," or maybe "Uniquely New York styled," but they don't really seem to be making a valiant effort to follow college students around the country.
@randomnessish: If you want us to believe in the existence of a Tennessee Duane Reade, you are going to have to provide hard photographic evidence or a google street view link.
I fear that I may have added to this controversy rather than diffused it.
@ChillbearLatrigue: As a Taoist Master in training and a displaced New Yorker, I had to walk back my initial response which was "You obviously don't know what the fuck you're talking about because DR is a local drug chain...." I paused and thought maybe there was that one DR they opened in an obscure part of Tennessee. It was only then that I went to the DR website and discovered the only places listed as locations were in and around NYC. I didn't see anything that was south of New Jersey. And by then I'd calmed down and even presented a more diplomatic response by injecting the possibility there was a DR look-a-like in Tennessee.
@randomnessish: also, what do you mean deep south? if you're in nashville, then i beg to differ, but if you're anywhere else in tennessee then carry on...
I sat in front of him at Citifield a few weeks ago. I felt so bad for him because of all the idiots harrassing him for his autograph. Let the guy enjoy a baseball game! One dude asked him to sign baseball gloves belonging to his 2 kids, aged about 6 and 8. Unclear to me that the kids had any idea who he was, and besides, why would they want a baseball glove signed by Matthew Broderick?
@hurleyburley: When Ferris Bueller goes to a baseball game, an art museum, a parade, or Chicago in general, it comes with the expectation of being harrassed.
OK, picture it: You are standing in line at Duane Reade or any other drug store. Behind the counter are all kinds of nicotine patches, out there for everyone to see. Who the hell then says, "Do you have any nicotine patches!!!??"
Then, according to the "spotter," he had a certain brand name of patches that he wanted. Yeah, right.
Mr. Broderick is not the sharpest tool in the shed. The most surprising thing about this little anecdote is that he needed nicotine patches at all...thought he quit years ago.

I'm waiting for this one to show up in the video stores on 8th Ave..

Oh, and it's just as dingy and depressing as the Duane Reades in NY.

Also, the patches come in different strengths to wean you off nicotine, so he may have been looking for the right ones.
