I know her daughter, Kitt Shapiro. Now that's a handle! They were like to peas in a pod, very close, very loving toward each other. Eartha Kitt was NOT a Hollywood mother. She could cook and mom it up with the best of 'em. RIP, great lady.

She ran away many times, in NYC she slept on subways and rooftops. When she made her break for stardom, she never looked back.
Her exotic accent I think is part of her ferocious self-creation as a star. It was said in the NYT obit (where I gleaned these factoids) that she spoke 6 languages, but I think that's an exaggeration, though she certainly learned French.
But she's American, a triumph of will, determination, and imagination, fierce drive, a supernatural sense of the person she wanted to become. And she did it. What an amazing life, what a powerful personality.
