The link says it was a 5.6. These things get revised, so maybe that's what happened.
5.6 is fairly large but in a city built for earthquakes, it probably wouldn't result in much damage, if any. (5.6 is not classified as "major", which is one thing I remember from living in San Francisco... where I lived through a 5.6.)
This is a bit sensationalist. The epicenter of the quake was not Mexico City, but ~150 miles south. So I don't think it was really much more than a tremor there.
The CNN web site says people in Mexico City only tremors and are brushing it off. The Mexicans are sitting on strategic reserves of tequila and mezcal, so they might just be okay.
