These clips are the first time I have ever ever watched anything from American Idol. Yes, I live under a rock. It is very cool and comfortable. That being said, the first guy at the piano is yummy.

So the kids are encouraged to do all this arranging and "making the song their own" throughout the season, but they aren't allowed to so much as change the key for the original song?

I don't know, I think Lambert looks more the spawn of Rene Russo and Tab Hunter. Kris Allen is more like the fruit of the (unlikely) pairing of Hal Sparks and Mary Tyler Moore.

Agreed! It really was a testament to these guys' talent that they sounded okay with their awful second and third song choices. Neither of them had any business performing the songs Mr. Simon Moneybags gave them -- what is it about Brits that makes them love hearing ultra-pasty people singing R&B? And the Kara-cowritten "follow your dreams" song was worse than most "Idol" show-closers, which is really saying something.

Not since From Justin to Kelly has this show tried so hard to make someone a star and ruin his career in one fell swoop.

@TedSez: Kara's cowritten song was a double-fail. Not only did she herself say that it was too high for Kris (how did that happen?), as Richard points out, but Simon gave the song a jab when he snarked about "the mountains and hurricanes" and rolled his eyes. Not a great debut, Kare-Kare.
