I'm about to head out to do some grocery shopping before the football games start up (GO BUCKEYES) and I just thought I'd pop in to see about the possibility of starting up a SMFF. Any takers? Maybe a SAFF?
Here's a little some'n some'n to get things started.
@bjonston: I like this idea. Here's my Saturday afternoon standby. Now I'm off to the neighborhood coffeeshop to spend the afternoon with spatial statistics...BIG SIGH.
Soooo I just spent forever on YouTube looking for the good version of "Caroline Says II." However, I have now realized that what I believed was the good version of "Caroline Says II" is in fact "Stephanie Says."
@ChuffedLittleMuffin: Those guys were something. Their "'69 Live" just may be my favorite record album of ever, when I'm forced to choose. It's my desert island pick.
@ChuffedLittleMuffin: Why do I always end up with the videos that are no longer available. I'm watching a movie right now, on the other hand, that would do better to be no longer available.
Sigh. Brian de Palma...not ALL ideas are GOOD ideas.
@ocd soundsystem: Heh, yah, Lords of the New Church. All this stuff was permeating the air where I was walking around. And, whuf, Lena Lovich, I have such a crush on her.
I've heard tell her last album was quite good, but I ain't heard it. I mean, regardless of what people were saying, I sort of subconsciously assumed she was singing about liking soup, I figure.
She toured, maybe last year it was, and I missed it and am kicking myself to this day.
@ChuffedLittleMuffin: aww chuffed, you know just how to bait me. she IS horrible. And I am off to bed. Please leave me something (furry) to find in the morning :P
@ocd soundsystem: Because I'm old, I remember being somewhat mindblown when this was new. I adored this. MTV didn't exist yet, I don't think, but it was right around the corner. VideoWest...anybody remember VideoWest? Came outta California, and I saw it on my Midwestern public television station.
In my day, there were three real channels, and like two and a half UHF channels, and your younger siblings were your remote control.
But boy, I have had a lot of random lovin' and support delivered to me this week via my fellow commenters, so, tons of thanks for that. I need it right now, and you guys came through.
@poisonville: G'night, Poison. Most doctors love pharma, and they'll write it up for you if you merely discuss it with 'em. But definitely research, research, research. Because doctors are also on the take from the pharma companies.
@poisonville: Goodnight! And generics of those drugs are cheap! So don't let price deter you. Ok,celebrity endorsement over. Man, I am like the Julia Allison of psychotropic meds, huh?
I've been thinking of asking for sleeping pills for lifelong occasional insomnia, but I realize I feel shy, as if asking for condoms at the town drugstore.
@poisonville: I don't like sleeping pills. Ambien and the like do weird shit. I too have had lifelong insomnia, and I find that a low dose of benzos (xanax, klonopin, etc) a while before bed stops the restlessness enough that I can essentially get to sleep myself. This is serious advice, btw. Failing that, benadryl!
Meaning hypothetically asking the doctor? Well, it's sort of hypothetical. I almost asked at my last checkup last year, but didn't quite get the words out.
@poisonville: I hear you. It's hard to ask outright.
I think the only meds I could actually qualify for are the ones to treat OCD, and even that's pushing it. I thought I outgrew it, but now I'm not so sure. I'm not talking OCD as in "anal retentive." I'm talking OCD like reading every fourth line of a book 16 times, which I did as a child.
@T.S._delegate: wow. that's intense. i used to count steps, which i never thought was a problem, though maybe it was, but i never backtracked or anything.
@minou: I'll give them a try. You make a compelling case--you definitely could make a killing as a celebrity endorser.
@poisonville: I think it's only a problem if you can't stop it without some emotional trauma. I had some pretty crazy habits involving counting as a child, but as an adult I have a pretty innate sense for space and math, which I attribute to spending so much time thinking about squares and cubes and infinite patterns. Our habits shape us in strange ways. Now I'm a geographer of sorts.
I think I always thought of the medical establishment as a bunch of "pill pushers," quacks to stay away from, and now it just hit me--hey, they're pill pushers! Same idea in a whole new light.
@poisonville: Yes. "Pill Pushers" is a good thing.
(Actually these drugs aren't especially fun for me, usually. I have had chronic anxiety since age 6 so even while I joke about benzos, I don't really fuck around with my pills. I need them to work.)
@poisonville: Suggested dialogue for getting drugs: Oh Doctor! This anxiety is ruining my life. It prevents me from enjoying my day-to-day activities. I'm at the end of my rope and I'm allergic to all anti-depressants. Oh, alas! What shall I do? (Wring hands, flutter eyelids, fill benzo prescription)
@Incognito: Hmm. I don't panic. Sometimes I get anxious, but everyone does. When is it a disorder? I guess when you're getting your prescription filled. I tend more toward lethargic depression than anxiety. But it sounds like the xanax are more fun.
@Private Hangnail: Oh, nice! I'm not trying to be a travel-name-dropper, but I had the extremely surreal experience of being in a middle of nowhere village on Lombok off of Bali, but they had a gigantic television at this open air bar that showed me that video for the first time. I mighta misted up, watching it.
