According to the Fire Department, the fire occurred when Silda Spitzer got in the back seat of the taxi and took a look at the front page of today's Post, causing her head to explode.
You can tell from the 2nd shot that the barrier separating the restaurant's seating area from the sidewalk has collapsed and there is debris, so it's probably real. Also, a movie explosion would be far, far more dramatic--they would probably have launched the cab 100 feet in the air and made all those pretty round light fixtures explode.
The lunch menu still seems to be up, though, so business as usual!
You can also tell it isn't a movie shoot by the complete absence of cameras, crew, barriers holding back the hordes of tourists who collect whenever they see filming, etc. ...
@City_Dater: I do see a bunch, maybe not hordes, of onlookers. But you're right. And on a movie set the restaurant would actually be full for more effect.
