    Other Kerick trivia - his mother was (is?) a murdered hooker. He wrote a book all about it to cash in and give himself major "bootstrap" cred with the republicans when he was still nursing major political ambitions. (i.e. before Bush appointment fiasco and corruption charges galore) So 9/11 wasn't the only tragedy he used to try and further his ambitions. #bernardkerik

    This photo looks like it's from the same set as No. 4, and it's dated 1985. Was he sporting a stiffy the whole time?

    I know, no one cares, but...

    That's not half-bad form. Kick is waaay too high for anything but a photo-op, but whatever. People love the high kick, even though it has almost no real application. Gotta give him credit for keeping the supporting heel near the ground and tucking that elbow in nice and tight. You don't often see white dudes with good form, esp. from that era.

    Also, that's probably not Karate. Looks like TKD, and would make more sense given the geography and the height of that kick. Then again, the gi looks like the Japanese kind. #bernardkerik

    @Motoko Kusanagi: I care!

    Agreed, nice form for a show-off photo kick. But his toes not being pulled back -- driving me nuts ^_^

    I think it's definitely TKD. The gi is what would have been worn then, because the new (ugly) v-neck TKD uniforms come from the WTF (haha) to differentiate TKD from karate. It's a shame that the new uniform is associated with TKD, because I think they are basically the polo shirts of the martial arts world. And I mean that with all possible fashion disdain. (ITF still uses a nice-lookin' gi, to the best of my knowledge).

    Back in 1975, the WTF was just getting started and probably didn't have its yucky v-neck uniforms yet.

    @Motoko Kusanagi: He's kicking with the edge of his foot. That's a side kick. You're just seeing it from a weird angle. The toe curl is what you get when you're tensing your foot a lot. #bernardkerik

    @Pope John Peeps II: You impact with the blade of your heel, but if you don't curl all your toes, you'll have a rude awakening when you're kicking through anything that's not air. (Been doing TKD for about 11 years now, learned the hard way). Toe curl's good technique. #bernardkerik

    @Pope John Peeps II: Yeah, I can't say I can even get my toes to do what his are. (But curled toes are proper form, at least in TKD -- karate could be different.)

    Ironically, I can't tuck my thumb for knifehand. Please defend my photos after I'm hauled away for corruption. ^_^ #bernardkerik

    @Motoko Kusanagi: I have total side-kick envy. But he's not protecting his junk. And as for whether its TKD or karate, over here on the soft-form side, we think it's all the same.

    @onebadclam: I don't know. I haven't been there since 1977. But the memories of the one bathroom that all the women in the joint would watch, keeping count of how many men were in it only to line up and take it over when we all realized it was empty, those memories are...pungent.

    I work down the street from McSorley's, on a warm day it makes the block smell like shit and is always seeping tourists that clog the sidewalk. Also, 1976 was the first year that they allowed women to enter the place, look it up. YAY McSorley's. #mcsorleysoldalehouse
