We have a similar issue at present where it has emerged that the police had a paid informant infiltrate the Green Party's Parliamentary Offices, as well as several other (law-abiding and legal) environmental and activist groups. Apparently he frequently attempted to persuade them to commit illegal activities, etc., and was just seen as a general nuisance. Understandably, the Green Party is pretty darn pissed that the police targeted them, especially when they are elected representatives in Parliament (with 11% of the party vote, natch).

So if I were to, say, write a novel in which the "hero" planned a terrorist attack in good enough detail, I could get myself arrested and thrown in jail along with these bozos? Would I have to get on the NYT bestseller list first, or would merely publishing the thing be enough to get busted?

Oh, how I love your take on this. Foiled plots are from feckless wannabe losers, caught by an overzealous, fear-mongering government. Plots that occur are the result of a bungling government asleep at the switch. Do you actually believe this, or are you just baiting for page views and comments? If the former, you really are in need of counseling. If the latter, bravo, jerk.

@HandsomeBwonderful: I think you're overlooking the causal relation between the two. 9/11 was a successful plot because the government was asleep at the wheel; the consequent foiled plots occurred as a response to the failure of 9/11.

It's probably a mistake to believe that anything behaves the same way all the time, without taking past consequences into account.

@braak: I am aware of 9/11 being a failure of foresight by the government. But the casual indifference to jihadist mentality here in the US by pseudo-erudite charlatan JO's like the author of this post is really annoying.

the saddest fact of all is that this is not an isolated incident of an informant basically plotting an attack for a "suspected terror cell". practically every conviction of a supposed terror group thus far has been shady shit.

@Truculent: LOL... what, exactly can you not do today, that you were doing so freely eight years ago? How many times has the secret service knocked on your door?

And just MAYBE these demented crackheads are all just talk, until of course one of them actually DOES something, then we're all looking to point fingers at the security services for not seeing the obvious warning signs and stopping it. But when we catch them in advance, we have you people whining about how they're all just lazy and shiftless and wouldn't have ever been able to do anything anyway and the government is being ridiculous blah blah blah.

We'll see what Hopey does. My guess? The exact same thing.
