@MissNormaDesmond: You're right. It absolutely wasn't a mistake. The Times and WaPo were reporting (in the Times, as the lead story on the front page of its website) that Scozzafava intended to endorse Owens at least as early as Sunday morning, Nov. 1. Fox willfully misinterpreted Scozzafava's statement and ignored the reporting from legitimate journalists. I'm sure it was an honest mistake from an impartial, apolitical "news" organization. #politics
Was the error made during the 9 hours of Fox News' 24 hour programming that is actual news? Or is this just someone's opinion of what they think she really meant when she endorsed the Democtratic candidate? #politics
To be fair, she's just about the only NY Republican not currently backing Hoffman. Owens got the union endorsements he was missing, and Scozzafava's support, but not much else.
Looks like it will probably go Owens, as most of Scozzafava's supporters were fairly moderate, with the really conservative crowd already supporting Hoffman. The Observer's got an anonymous Republican strategist saying Scozzafava's 21 percent will probably split 14-7 in favor of Owens. Which will make this move all the more embarassing to the national Republican party, so hey, at least there's that.#politics
@Oryx Hearts Crake: Latest polls show Hoffman up by 6%, Owens static, and a whopping 18% undecided, with 6% still going for Scozzafava. Really it all depends on that 18% - do they go to the polls and vote for the Democrat, or do they stay home? These seem like the two most likely scenarios. #politics
@Adah: To be fair to whom? I don't understand what you mean. If you're saying that it was somehow an honest mistake, I'm afraid I don't buy it. Since the whole narrative about Scozzafava was that she was unlike most Republicans, assuming that she'd chosen to back the guy who'd fucked up her candidacy because most other Republicans were doing it doesn't make much sense. But maybe I'm not understanding you correctly. #politics
@MissNormaDesmond: Early speculation was that Scozzafava would either stay silent out of resentment over her treatment by Hoffman, or would endorse Hoffman to save her ass politically. Indeed, Scozzafava originally did not endorse either candidate upon dropping out of the race.
I feel bad for her. By all accounts, she's a wonderful woman who never sold out her convictions during the campaign. The problems really started with fundraising. Scozzafava has traditionally run on union support, and the unions were divided. The traditional national Republican fundraisers weren't giving her money due to her moderate positions, and the women's groups and pro-choice groups didn't support her either. You can't win without money. #politics
@Adah: Right, thanks for giving me some more info about the race, but I still don't get what you meant by saying, "To be fair". None of that constitutes anything approaching a sufficient excuse for getting something so significant so wrong, and doing it repeatedly. #politics
"souls as pure as Hillary Clinton, Eliot Spitzer, and Harvey Weinstein". Please tell me you're kidding, their souls are about as pure as the snow that's been driven through. #matthewhiltzik
Maybe he was referring to the softball aspect of the interview? Fox News is notorious for letting the party masters use its airways as a free political commercial venue, which if nothing else violates journalistic ethics. #foxnews
