    For those of you who read French, here are the more inflammatory excerpts from the original book. As other commenters have pointed out, he's clearly referring to college-age guys, not kids, though he also confesses to patronizing prostitutes.

    In the context of the book, the way that he uses the French word for "boys" in sexual situations does not include underage boys. It's clear from his descriptions of the "boys" that they are indeed young men.

    Yes, there are scenes describing his relationships with young male prostitutes, and while that may be somewhat problematic for some people, it hardly makes him unfit to be cultural minister or a blot on humanity. He wrote an autobiography about what it means to be gay. He describes situations of fear and shame at being gay in France.

    I can fully understand his position after having seen the attacks from the right on him.

    Creepy, nail-biting, if not boy fucker, then fucker of exploited youth with far less sexual agency and money than you have, shut your fucking baguette hole. Money and sex, you are at the heart of the fucked up system of sex tourism, so quit trying to expunge your guilt through literary confession.

    Please don't try to batter me, you righteous "sex-positive" apologists of third-world prostitution, with your cheesy moral relativism and empowerment tripe. Till you are out there selling your ass on the street yourself so your family can eat, you can shut yours too.

    @Mymoustache: Actually it is a place where many gay men go to have sex with men over 18. The younger boys are by far the minority. I 'm paid to moderate a site for gay thailand tourists and the vast majority of them want dudes over 18 and in fact trade tips on how to make sure the dude you hire is old enough.

    @drunkexpatwriter: Right, they just want them to LOOK young...not BE young...seriously, if you're arguing that Thailand is not a place people go for child prostitutes, you have your head up your ass. And as I said before, it's not legal... tolerated yes (it's that whole poor third world country with a thriving sex industry).

    @Mymoustache: The point is not that you can or cannot find child prostitutes in Thailand (as you no doubt could in many countries), but that children are far from the only ones working in the sex trade. In the absence of any real information about the boys Mitterrand might have paid for sex, it is irresponsible to accuse him of having sex with boys under the age of 18 (or whatever the actual legal age was at that time).

    @drunkexpatwriter: It has always been my understanding that there are people over 18 in THIS country who are interested in having sex. Of course, you have to treat them like humans and you lose the whole "can't say no" factor. And just because a prostitute (of any gender) is over 18 doesn't mean they are there are their free will. Very likely they aren't.
