Prostitution is inevitable, and should be the least of our police worries, there are much bigger fish to fry in Hunters point, Sunnydale, Western addition, Alemany projects, Potrero hill. Violence is what we should be worried about.

As one of the most profitable industries of transnational criminal networks, trafficking humans for prostitution brings a host of other violent crimes along for the ride, especially drugs and racketeering. Inviting this milieu into one's community with open arms is perhaps one of the biggest mistakes a community can make. As they said in Veronica Guerrin, "Things can always get worse".

I am with ADismalScience. I can't believe prostitution is still not legal across the nation. The is the 21st century - the 'nay-sayers' are acting like prudes. And it is not only about given prostitutes the right to practice their trade in safety. It is also about given the 'Johns' - usually men I would imagine - the right to choose their sexual inclination and do what they want with their bodies. The only way to get rid of prostitution is to get rid of the prudes. Too many women still have not become 'sexually liberated' but at the same time will scream for equal pay and opportunity. There is sexual inequaltiy being practiced so long as prostitution is made a crime and the prudes have their whim ...

My country legalized prostitution a few years ago, for human rights reasons. It was really something to hear transexual MP Georgina Beyer speak to the bill in Parliament. She explained that when she was a prostitute (she went on the game to get money for her operation) she was raped twice by johns and could not go to the police as they would have arrested her. It's pretty amazing when you see an MP say "When I was a prostitute..." in Parliament. I think she's right - Prostitutes should have the protection of the law. And there hasn't been a huge vice explosion here (New Zealand) just because they do now.

Oh, yeah, I forgot to mention! Bill called today and asked us to vote against 8. Clinton, that is. "As Democrats, we know..."

I'm declined to state, and my man is green party, so not sure where they got our number. Still, a vm from Bill! it was fun!

All laws are poorly written at first, but decriminalization is key. That way cops can't just yank these poor girls off the street and have instant leverage when they want questions answered about the local drug, sex, and violence addicts.

The homeless problem in SF was always something that creeped me out. The beggars are smart though. The last time I was there, I heard some guy asking for a buck from everyone except when he detected foreign tourists. Then it became, "Can you spare $10?"

My favorite memory on a recent trip to SF was watching a homeless man harass a young couple for money. He followed them for a block and a half and yelled at them the whole way.

I left my heart in SF.

That this measure could even have a chance of passing is the real development here: decriminalization of prostitution has never been very popular outside of Vegas.

It's actually not legal in Vegas. Outside of the county though, all bets are off.

Please note that Prop K does not decriminalize. It merely cuts funding from police enforcement of prostitution crimes, including raids on suspected human trafficking in massage parlors. Recently they have been raiding parlors and finding girls as young as 13 in the Sunset.

This is the stupidest idea ever - why wouldn't you just decriminalize? This proposition is the worst of both worlds - a murky legal grey area where prostitutes and sex slaves aren't protected, pimps have relative impunity from raids, and the religious right gets to claim victory when the predictable consequences occur. I love California's Swiss style government.
