After reading the comments and reflecting on the post:
We do need to ridicule military parades. We do need to call attention to the murderous undertones of Chinese displays of power. We do need to reflect on the fact that the Chinese are so smart that they managed to achieve economically what hundreds of nuclear weapons could never achieve. If this was an honest parade they would have their central bankers piloting the dragon boats.
Wow. The whole tone of this post is just...nasty. Seriously. Big country, lots of people - so they want to celebrate big, so what? And you're just too cool for school aren't you - "Hey, dragons are dumb, dude, and wearing flowers on your head is geigh." I think you were going for some kind of parody of the "red-blooded American" jerk, here, but failed. The jerkiness was, alas, all too real.
@Maya Twocents: Wow. The whole tone of this comment is just...nasty. Seriously. Big blog, lots of readers - so they want to goof off, so what? And you're just too cool for school aren't you - "Hey, ridiculing communism is dumb, dude, and parody is geigh." I think you were going for some kind of a serious criticism, here, but failed. The unintentional comedy was, alas, all too real.
@the lost texan: Personally, I am just a bit concerned about those automatic guns they are holding. As well as about the fact that as a straight man, I've even noticed that.
Well Andrew, you're skirting awfully close to asking "why do all the Chinese people look alike?" I'm not saying that you've made a racist remark with the headline, but you may want to be sensitive to how it sounds or may be interpreted. Besides, as others have already noted, from a distance our own celebrations don't offer that much variety either.

Lest I be accused of conflating culture and regime, I'll take this opportunity to state, however futilely: Free Tibet!
10/01/09
Absolutely, but I always like to add: and the rest of the "China", too.
10/01/09
Yup. Up to and including the hot chicks with guns. Or especially them.

My thought was: "You could bounce a 10 yuan coin off of those militarily toned buh-toooooohks."
Certainly more mature than "Those boots were made for wok-ing."

They see our Rockettes and raise us a brigade of armed militiawomen of approximately the same height.

Yao-za!

btw... the Dolan person in the recent Rockette-related post might be interested in this bit of information.

I missed that, shoot. I think I've heard the Rockettes as an ensemble may be endangered.
10/01/09
Nothing wrong about that.

Hey, a guy can dream can't he?
10/01/09
No worries. Chicks with guns are hot.

@Smitros:
Chicks with gums too!

Is this like Israeli military fetish stuff?
10/01/09
Yeah, I guess it's kinda like sexually ambiguous japanese cartoon porn with a subtext of violence.
