    For a supposedly straight man, his knowledge of straight women's sexuality is abysmal.
    And it's too bad that Downey and Law won't be making out. There's only one Holmes and his name is Jeremy Brett. Not even Basil Rathbone comes close. The equation works thusly:
    Holmes movie - (Jeremy Brett + man-on-man heavy petting) = 80% decrease in my interest

    Medved is so scarily a closet "mo." I feel so sorry for that guy. I saw the trailer for this, RDJ's "accent" is bad. Really, not good. He would totally have to suck Law's dick for me to pay money to see this.

    Its common to tell what the actors should be thinking / feeling in the script. Most actors ignore the directions but the directions aren't for the actors for the most part. They serve the writer to help studio execs reading the scripts to imagine what would be happening. Makes it easier for them to feel the script "off the page" and thus greenlight it. I've seen scripts greenlit go to actors and by the time they get to the actors the actors have had their management go through and redact all stage directions so they won't influence their first reads.

    @Dave J.: That's exactly what I thought. I'm sure maybe there are some women out there that don't enjoy the sight of two men making out, but then again, it's about the same percentage as men who don't enjoy seeing two women making out.

    this has nothing to do with the article but, i'm sad that this movie will not be a correct representation of the actual books. i loved the sherlock holmes series, and if you want to be accurate you wouldn't put robert downey jr. as sherlock. he's supposed to be some old guy!
    but as they say, sexiness sells.

    @teenypanini: Holmes and Watson were only 27 and 29, respectively, when they first met, and the movie is (reportedly) set ten years later, so Jude Law is just about right and Downey is almost ten years too old for the part.

    Just an aside, but do all modern scripts have such exposition, basically telling the actors exactly how to act? I seem to recall that was a Screenwriting 101 no-no.

    @pixie: Great article, thx. With writer/filmmakers like Sofia Coppola, it's a bit different, because they know what they want to do from the get-go and they put minute details in the script for themselves, not so much for the actors. Like, the peach mesh underwear that Scarlet Johansson wore in the opening shot of "Lost in Translation" (to use an example quoted in the article) is a direct riff on John Kacere's paintings, and that's more Sofia setting the tone for her film than building up back story for the actors.

    As a straight woman I have to say that the only way I would even contemplate seeing this movie is if there was some tender Holmes/Watson love making. Or not tender. Whatever, the tender part isn't important but there has to be some sex.
