The Disneyfication of Times Square actually has a legit Disney root... they purchased, shut down, and cleaned up several grindhouse theaters in the early 90's along 42nd street. I recall walking through there right after it began... the boarded up theaters were painted bright, cheery colors.
They are adapting "Death: The High Cost of Living" but I dont think WB is doing that but Gaiman himself.
But Vertigo stuff is too cerebral for general audiences. Most Americans want bang pow action hero shit, and cant deal with actually thinking in a movie.
As much as I love Sandman, I can't see a film doing any justice to the source material. For one thing, the temptation to make the main character actually likable would prove immense and once that happens? pfft, fuhgeddaboudit.
You're on the right track with Vertigo titles, though. Let's see Preacher, Transmet, Y the Last Man or DMZ get the treatment. Those have enough "bang-bang, kiss the girl" to be be treated in a manner resembling "right."
Ya know what'll happen if they make a Sandman movie? Constantine. 'Nuff said. MAYBE WORSE.
@Bill Zilla: Except wouldn't all of those would have to be toned down in some way?
Preacher? Not in these United States. Red states would riot.
Y the Last Man is being developed, but with Shia Lebeouf. Yeah... that's a good casting choice.... I'm not even going to get started on 60 issues in 90 minutes.
Transmet? How would you do that? The budget would either be too high, everything would look muppety, or the whole plot would have to change to resemble something else. Would never work.
Vertigo has potential as HBO series, but as movies? Not going to happen, and especially not going to happen in a way you or I would enjoy them.
@Paul_Is_Drunk: I still don't get why LaBeouf is not a good choice for Yorrick, but whatever...
If Warner Bros. could pull their thumbs out of their asses they could get a really good set of traditional superhero movies going, with The Flash and Martian Manhunter, Wonder Woman, etc. At least they're finally lurching and limping towards a Green Lantern flick.
@Paul_Is_Drunk:
Yes, true. Preacher, if done correctly, probably couldn't get made as a film, But it could make a pretty good film.
I will refrain from judgement of Shia as Yorick until I have more information, but I'd describe my reaction as "cautiously pessimistic."
Transmet could be a great film and a better TV series. Perhaps not as a direct adaption of the original series, but the premise itself could drive a pretty decent movie if Ellis got a pass at the script... and I think Ellis might have a good time with it. Terry Gilliam would be a great choice for a director.
In general, I agree with you, though. Much better than all of this would be HBO dubbing Tuesday nights (for instance) "Vertigo Night" and airing fantastic adaptations of these phenomenal series, but.. ya know.. let's also wish for a pony and wings that work.
Given that WB is directly controlling the stick now and the name of this game is "let's make some cash from comix movies," I was merely positing some series that I feel would make much better films than Sandman.
Not one item about an actual comic book? And this is supposed to be a guide for posing as a nerd? Late to the party, buddy. (Although mainstream Hollywood has discovered Comicon as a promotional tool, there are still panels about stories printed on paper that haven't even been optioned for movies yet!) PS: I went to Comicon for at least 10 years in a row and recall the squalor of the Hotel San Diego.
You also forgot everything about Alice in Wonderland. Johnny Depp showed up. And so did David Tennant, to the Doctor Who panel. (Not that I would know from, like, personal experience... or anything.)
