In reply to Tourists Go to the Same Broadway Shows Year After Year
Came to NYC last spring and saw POTO, plan on coming again next year when Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Love Never Dies" (Phantom 2!!!!!1!) hops the pond from London. I will gladly put money into your economy to satisfy my phangirl crush.
    Yes, I am that geeky.

Next To Normal is great. But no tourist here with family wants to sit through a depressing show. See Richard's post about depressing Hollywood movies for the reasoning.

I'm waiting for the redesign where I don't have to read that some person I've met in 1997 for 3 seconds won 2.7 million dollars killing mobsters, or just adopted some digital pig on their digital farm, 20 times a day.

It's Ragtime, one word. And everyone should go see it. It closed way before its time in its first run in the 90s because Garth Drabinsky was too busy getting arrested to keep it afloat. Also, everyone go see Finian's Rainbow (a friend of mine is in it).

But the "sad" news here is non-news; not every new musical is destined to become a juggernaut. The post-holiday and winter months are always the worst for any show; if you can survive to spring, you know you've made it.

@unclevanya: I also know someone in "Finian's Rainbow"! My friend loves the FR company; he says it's one of the nicest groups of people he's ever worked with. I've seen the show twice now, and I'm planning to go again. Not only are the cast, staging and music great; the message is gloriously subversive. You must all buy tickets now. Now, I say!

And I can't begrudge "The Lion King" their success. It's a terrific show, with a truly original approach to the material that makes you almost forget the movie.

    Then, there's "Bye Bye Birdie".........oy.

@SarikaJalope: Usually Broadway does itself a favor by having certain shows lip synch a song during the Macy's parade. This year, we got John Stamos in a high school-quality number from Byrdie, and the cast of Shrek (which is closing) doing a number from the movie that's not even in the show. Smart?

Um, what I think is weird is the local NBC news-online's treatment of the story. What's with the adult "breasts" photo above the story, and the "girl-on-girl" caption on the video. Also, that "mood meter" is crazy!

The money for Billboard is in the charts, not the publication, if I understand it correctly. Perhaps he'll quit publishing the mag and turn it into a sales-analysis company directly marketing its services to interested parties (record companies, etc). At least that's what I would do. But then, I'm sitting on my bed in cut-offs in the middle of the day, so what do I know?

Even scarier: In Britain, "thousands of crimes are committed by under-10s, and almost 3,000 crimes were reported last year where the suspect was too young to be prosecuted:"
