In reply to The New iTunes for Magazines (Or an Irrelevant Venture) Is Here!
Really a masterful series of insights here. Maybe I just set my sights too high after that great party post yesterday. Then again, maybe I didn't. Some posts are going to be better, just like some are going to be worse. Having high hopes could have led to me getting smoked. Then again, I thought it was worth the gamble.

But you never know. How much would I pay to read Gawker right now? I don't have an e-reader. But am I less likely to come back? Changing that dynamic is what Gawker needs to worry about.

Ha: "Today, four prestigious magazine publishers, and News Corp..." Appreciate Murdoch's not in the mag biz, but still qualifies as a veiled swipe in my book - er, tablet/slate/e-thingy.

I only know what's in the post and under the link and yes, my initial instinct was to make a Pathfinder joke.

But I don't see why this couldn't complement a publication's website and perhaps provide them with some extra income.

Off the top of my head - A lot of magazine sites don't include the pretty pictures and this appears to let them to publish in the original layout.

Right now it's just the big boys, but if they open it up to smaller publications, it could be a boon for them.

I know that I sometimes see something on Hulu that's on a network, I don't get, so I'll sample it. The same could be true with this service, though it may sound a little like Pathfinder, but a one-stop electronic newsstand could introduce someone to a tiny publication from a regional source.

And though it may not be part of the current thinking, but if they make some of the additional advertising location-aware, they'll have another source of income, they can't access right now. Not to mention that adding location info to their formally static ads could give their sales a needed boost.

(For example, A Starbucks ad could include a map to the nearest location or a Holiday Inn Express advertisement could list those on the road ahead.)

@Magister: PS) Location-aware advertising could also open up untapped ad markets. Right now, there's not a lot of supermarket ads in magazines because supermarkets are regional, but if the magazine knew where you were in the country, they could serve you whatever Kroger division is nearby.

(Though of course, your e-reader would have to know where you are)

    Rule one:

Apparently, taking a trip from foreign country A into the US, flying around the US and then leaving on the same day to country B, just to return from country B two weeks later to the US, fly around a bit and leave that same day to country A is quite suspicious.

At least that's why the Homeland security guy took me off to an interrogation room to question me about my "flight patterns". Along with that jewish 9 year old girl in pigtails.

I plan to travel with a glitter crafted 'I Heart Osama' piece in my luggage with the intent of getting the attention of plenitude of snarky TSA workers who'll let me pass after having a hearty laugh.

As an unlikely backup I'm prepared for multiple cavity searches though I hardly think that doomsday plan will ever see the light of day.

The only time I got a secondary screening was when I was running late to a connecting flight (had to grab my luggage and go to another terminal because one was a domestic flight and the other was international) AND found out that my original flight had been canceled and was now flying an US airline that would not give me free booze and was leaving... now at another terminal. I started crying because boarding had already started. The NSA officials handed me tissues, and after they heard I was crying because I was no longer flying BA told me how to sneak booze onto my flight.

Just saying that they're not all bad.

He could've soften the blow by saying "If you have something that you don't want anyone to know, maybe you shouldn't be posting it on the internet in the first place."

Stupid question: Murdoch is railing against the search engines because he thinks they're stealing from him. Ok, so, that explains why he'd delist from Google- but not why he'd list on Bing. What gives?

What is more interesting than search engines paying for content is that this could ultimately save the news media business. Ignoring the concern to Joe Searchy and having to pick a search engine based on the results being listed for their favorite news, this could potentially allow newspapers to gain income and pay their journalists again. Certainly, there is a potential dark cloud with this concept, but there is a bright and shiny one as well The news media could survive based on search engines having to pay for access to content solving their diminishing revenue stream. Hard to say whether this is a short term or long term solution to that issue, but it certainly has potential and I look forward to seeing how this turns out.

@Monty: Paying journalists is a good thing and new revenue streams are vital for news organizations to pay for their current overhead. But the problem with the rosy scenario of search engines funding journalism is that the people who go to search engines looking for news are the ones who care the least about news brands. They're more likely to click on rocketnews.com or whatever it is as they are the WSJ.com. Which is exactly what infuriates newspaper owners like Murdoch. The folks who have favorite news sources are the ones who will go straight to those favorite news sources in the first place.

@Monty: In this video of Calacanis' original suggestion (or at least the first place, I heard it), he spends a lot of the time proposing sort of a bidding war to get content from the largest media companies, but its success would hinge a great deal on Microsoft's willingness to use exclusivity as a selling point.

IOW: The content companies would get a revenue stream, but as I hear him, Bing would be the primary beneficiary in the short run.

@Magister: Agreed. "Bing: The Only Place to Find the Wall Street Journal" would make a catchy tag line. And Microsoft probably like to lure in some other big-name brands. But I can't see them extending the same offer to smaller, lesser-known news orgs. McClatchy anyone?

@Gabriel Snyder: I think we are all in agreement. It is hard to know whether this agreement will ultimately be a winner for the news media or not. Will it even work for News Corp, let alone for small newspapers around the country? Why would Bing pay for content from the Eugene, Oregon Register Guard? Hard to imagine. That said, it is interesting to see this unfold - and I admit that I doubt either the rosy outlook nor the doom and gloom one will come to be. Usually truth falls somewhere in the middle, which in this case means it will not matter much.

@Gabriel Snyder: I don't know how far down Microsoft would like to go, but McClatchy owns a lot of big local papers. For instance in North Carolina, they own the two largest in the state, so maybe they could do some print trading and a couple of television ads saying something like "Bing: The exclusive index for the Charlotte Observer".

Murdoch might be the one to pioneer this and he might get some quick income, but if Microsoft is willing to pay and if they're willing to negotiate something with the other players, Google could easily lose market share over the long run.
