    I'm really baffled not by all the praise for the thrower, but of all the concern trolling. I wonder if I would feel different if the hopeful recipient of the tomato had been, Hillary Clinton or maybe Denis Kucinich, I would feel as indignant that people were cheering on this "act of violence."

    Honestly, I don't think I would be similarly be up in arms. This act is tantamount to those ativist groups who douse furried runway models in paint or that Iraqi journalist who threw his shoe at Dubya or that person who cracked an egg on Ahnold during his press junket/campaign for governor.

    In this country, we are alternately over-babied and over-armed. A tomato is not a dirty bomb or a gun. There are acts of protests that may ruin garments, and sting eyes, but that don't necessarily shut down discourse. I'm not saying liberals have found a new weapon to use in the culture war against the teabaggers but there's a hell of a lot of difference between a few of us cheering on an errant tomato thrower and prominent political figures (not necessarily palin) advocating revolutions against the government and the president. Don't fall for her martyr routine and chill out.

    @Helio: Waitaminnit. I didn't say a tomato is a dirty bomb or that I fell for her martyr routine. I'm saying that a tomato dropped on someone's face from two stories up could put out an eye. A smooshy tomato thrown from a chair in the first row: probably not so bad. But we should stick with tradition, there's nothing wrong with the tried-and-true cream pie. It makes a better statement.

    @Helio: I haven't commented before, at least since the new comment system went up, but I'm not a troll.

    I am all for fighting speech with speech. This flies in the face of that.

    To have some fool throw a tomato is one thing. That people have rallied around that juvenile and violent act is what bothers me.

    Please tell me where this leads? One person chucks a tomato; what is next?

    It's not enough to say you disagree with what she says. The essence of our democracy is that people are allowed to say things that are abhorrent to others.

    @andymetzger1234: You imagine someone is going to pull out their gloc after dodging a tomato? If they do, this is exactly what I mean by our society being 'over babied and over armed.' It's the same society in which schools stop playing dodgeball and starting food fights are a suspend-able offense. These slights, which do have violent aspects have become so so conflated with real, physically harmful violence that you fear (perhaps rightly) what the reaction may be.

    After getting hit with a tomato, one of two reactions spring to my mind. The recipient wipes the shit off their face and moves on (or get their body guards t0 cover them up) or they grab the nearest tomato and have at it. Maybe I'm being too idealistic but until they start legislating "Tomato Control Laws" (which Palin would be against, surely) and I see "Get Guavas Off Our Streets" campaigns, we should all remain calm.

    Sorry I called you a troll. If anything, you seem overly sincere.

    @Helio: Overly sincere... I can live with that. But I'm not afraid of anyone getting hurt by a tomato.

    It's wrongheaded to encourage physical attacks against people who don't share your politics, especially during a time of political tension.

    I don't see how you can argue with that.

    This was an act of sheer idiocy and shouldn't be applauded in any way. Dude gave Palin what she desperately craves, a kind of justification for her self-pity and claims of victimhood.
