    Listen up, you callow whippersnappers. You used to have to wait TWENTY YEARS before you could assign a new generational identity to yourself. Nowadays the changeover seems to take place every two or three years. I had barely gotten used to Gen X before someone changed it to Y.


    "Oh, but we don't have anything in common with those creaky old Blair Witch Flavor Flavs," I hear you whine. Hey, greenhorns, I was born in 1961, but they still call me a Baby Boomer. Do you think I feel anything in common with the Woodstock Nation? But back then, when the popular culture stuck you with a title you swallowed hard and wore it. AND WORE IT WITH PRIDE.

    @saintjim: Good/bad news. As someone born in 1961, you are considered both a Boomer (1945-1964) and a Gen Xer (1960-1979). [This is a change from the earlier rev that had Gen X starting at 1970, which left me, born in 1965, a person with no generational identity at all.]


    Hey, remember how the older boomers used to tell us '60s born kids how we'd never amount to anything because we weren't participants in the glorious '60s themselves, not having protested and all that shit? Yeah, Obama is real in-your-face to them.

    Okay, the district is fairly Republican (about 6 points more Republican than the average House district) and only 6% black, so this guy is not yet the great white hope for the party. That being said, he represented an inner-city district in the state house, and is the sort of politician that the Republicans need a lot more of if they're not going to go the way of the Whig party.


    Also, in addition to totally being "that student council guy" he's also "that guy who started his IRA at 14 and invested in real estate at 18." So he's doubly twerpy.
