If it died of some disease, I can totally understand not eating it, but you and I all know that this is a woman who composts her leftovers, so what's the difference whether or not the bird was cooked before it goes into the bin?

Did anyone else see Tom Selleck on The Daily Show a while back? He was talking about how one of the cows on his farm died, and his wife and daughter loved it like a pet so he had to have it cremated instead of eating it. The big laugh came when he was describing how HUGE the vat of ashes was.

Sadly, I can clarify the tale of Chicken Orlean. There was a previous set of chickens, one of whom got sick and turned out to have some freaky chicken disease. That chicken was put down and cremated. Meanwhile some new chickens were bought, who are thus far healthy.

(A chronicle of the Orlean chickens really would make a good article.)

@Recently Newly Redundant: That IS a sad tale. I prefer the wanton speculative tales over the sad reality.

BTW there is a proposed federal regulation from the USDA, the National Animal Identification System (NAIS) that would require all livestock, even backyard chickens, to be radio-tagged or micro-chipped and records kept and reports made to the USDA tracking each and every animal.

So, if anyone asks you about it, tell them it's a bad idea! Thank you.

@Robert Synnott: It's being pushed by the huge farms, who are feeling economically threatened by smaller operations (which are tiny in comparison, output-wise, and are no real threat to their overall market size). The factory farm people wrote the whole thing-- they don't have to tag each animal, only one tag per thousands of animals. But small farmers and backyard animal keepers have to tag each one.

If you're trying to have an actual small family farm, the cost will be wildly prohibitive. If you're just a suburban chicken keeper, it forces you to do a lot of paperwork and pay someone to microchip your birds.

It's designed specifically to kill and control potential competition, not to protect the integrity of the food chain.

The diseases are brought and spread by the big operations anyway. Not by my little flock of hens or Trashtastic's goat.

One of mine got out last week, and the dog killed it. So I put it in a garbage bag and put it in the trash. Cremate a chicken? What? I still feel bad for not gutting and plucking it (but it was 5:30 am and I just wasn't up for it). Sheesh. People who would have a chicken cremated shouldn't have livestock.

Isn't the whole point of raising chickens that you eventually "cremate" them at home, perhaps rubbed with butter and stuffed with some lemons and rosemary?
