I'm most disappointed with the fact that the VP's bunker is in such a lame and obvious place. Cheney always made it sound like he had to pass through a mirror and defeat a dragon to get back from his secure, undisclosed location.

the best part of the article is when they discuss how neighbors complained about loud construction noise, and received letters saying, "please don't complain, we're building a secret thing here." Of course it was a bunker! what else could they possibly be building?

I'm at least impressed that a Democrat takes his own personal safety as lightly as the Administration seems to take the "Overseas Contingency Operations." Incidentally, how does that term cover the domestic end of terror attacks?

Think about it: each person in the line of succession is worse than the one before. Biden is worse than Obama, and Pelosi is actually worse than Biden. I don't even want to know who's after the Joker.

@The One: I didn't know this, but since you mentioned it, I looked it up. After the Speaker, it is the highest ranking member of the Senate - the President Pro Tempore of the United States Senate. Currently it's Robert Byrd. Then it goes to Hillary as SoS, then Geithner. Janet "Swine Flu" Napolitano is 18th in the line of succession.

Interestingly, Obama and Grover Cleveland are the only U.S. presidents to skip the Gridiron Club Dinner in its 124 year history.

From that 2007 Politico article to which you linked:

@persimmon: Actually I saw that in the Politico article, and read a bunch of other stuff about this year's dinner to see if I could find any mention of Biden discussing the bunker, and just about every piece I've read mentioned the same Obama/Cleveland factoid. It even says it on the GCD Wikipedia page, so it has to be correct...

Bush did miss the event a couple of times, but he'd appeared at the event previously, so it's sort of a technicality, but skipping this year but Obama in company with Grover Cleveland. Hopefully he'll attend next year to end this horrible pockmark on his record.
