Lobbyists also write the bills that become the laws. So how do we go about buying some for ourselves, instead of letting them all be bought by those who wish to hurt us?

@Foster Kamer: Agreed. And hey, how about that Times piece on the head of Sullivan and Cromwell that bizarrely spends more space on telling us what a nice, unassuming, and short guy he is than it does telling us details of the way he gamed the bailout and regulatory system for his client moneychangers? Apparently if you are short and nice in your private life, it makes up for being big and evil in business. #healthcare

It's not really shocking if you're aware, as someone else pointed out, that lobbyists already write most legislation. It's just a little more blatant, a little more shameless, a little more depressing. Fuckers. At least try to pretend like you give a crap about your constituency. #healthcare

No longer is that the case. What's even more sad however, is how gullible so many of their constituents seem to be when it comes to their forked tongues. They so often seem to lick it all up based purely on political affiliation. #healthcare

So basically Big Pharma's relationship to Congress is a lot like the one I had with my favorite puppet as a kid. I would slip my hand up its ass and it would say whatever I wanted it to.
    It was an all-too-snug fit.

Congress in this instance re-affirms the old adage: a cheap whore is never out of work.

When the history of the fall of this country is written, the cause of death will read "Cancer by Multi-national Corporations."

This is the greatest, most depressing, post I have read here, and that's going quite a ways.

Yeah, they also help write many of the bills for legislators. The fact is that politicians cannot be subject matter experts on everything. Lobbyists have a lot of information about their specific causes, much more so than many politicians and their staff. It only makes sense that they are involved in the process. I'm not saying it's right, but I see why it happens. #healthcare

@mfnher: The reason they have staffs is to filter out the bad data and accumulate the good data. The staffs should be acting as gatekeepers/filters between the lobbyists and the pols.

The disconnect between the current crop of moderately smart pols and "the people" doesn't lead to revolution, it devolves into plain speaking pols offering "commonsense" slogans for solutions, think Palin or (gasp!) Glenn Beck.

@mfnher: They don't need to be experts on every topic. Congressional debate is supposed to be where Congress deliberates, hears various points of information from members who have researched or had their staff research a given issue, asks questions about that information, and makes up its collective mind. Instead, it's where they show up with their talking points given them by the people who've bought their loyalty, and make speeches while their colleagues play Solitaire on their laptops and then vote the way they were paid to. #healthcare

@mfnher: We all learned something pretty basic in school about doing research: You search out the facts; then you sift them, think about them, and give your own take on them. You don't just regurgitate word for word what your sources say. I hope our legislators would be at least as conscientious and thoughtful as a bright high school student. #healthcare

@TheBusinessGuy: I live in Arizona where the majority of our state legislators do not have any kind of education beyond high school. Our governor didn't even go to college. I would have to assume that we have some how managed to collect the best and the brightest from a state that ranks 48th in the nation in education. I understand this happened to a national politician, but I see this shit happening in my state every day. I'm not saying it's right, but the asshats and their staff that gets elected certainly do not match the intellectual level of a bright high school student. It makes perfect sense that they are stealing words from lobbyists.

The truly sad thing is that for most of the American people, this will be a one-day story, and on a Sunday at that. Why? Since the revised and extended remarks appeared only (for the most part) in the Congressional Record, there is no juicy video, and the story is a little too complex for sound bites anyway. Plus, is anyone surprised that our representatives don't belong to us anymore? But yes, kudos to the Times for proving that old media can rise to the occasion magnificently. #healthcare

@Tru Invincible: Good ideas, except that just about everyone I know reads the Times. (Sad but true.) This story has to make headway in the heartland for real change to occur, and that means it has to be picked up by television--which it won't be, at least not for more than a day, because the story just isn't visual and simple. Doesn't mean that the good ideas aren't worth trying; I'm just saying "Don't hold your breath." But yes, kudos also to Foster, whom I should have kudo'd in the first place. #healthcare

@TheBusinessGuy: @mfnher: Old school kicking it was that an honest politician is one that stays bought. So there needs to be someone doing the buying for the people's side.

And yet the "heartland" knows there is corruption, but chooses to listen to the hatemongers #healthcare
