Why can't we just refer to these people as what they really are...i.e., mentally ill? A paranoid schizophrenic person will latch onto an idea and become obsessed with it. Sometimes that idea is an ideological movement (white supremicism, pro-life), sometimes it's a particular celebrity, and sometimes it's the notion that the neighbor's dog wants him to kill people. The man was batsh*t folks, plain and simple. To say he is representative of a particular movement only gives those groups the attention and credence they crave.

@pooks: First of all, not all people who commit acts of violence similar to this are clinically mentally ill. Hateful, bigoted, capable of violence in certain circumstances, yes, but their actual mental state is beyond our diagnosis. (A friend of mine is fond of saying, "The DSM IV is not a toy.")
Also, he definitely is a representative of a particular movement, and way of belief: eliminationism.

If you're at all familiar with the Museum entrance layout, then you know you'll never get through security, let alone the main exhibit, without a small army.

@Red letter: I hate to admit this because it is anti-ethical to most of what I am about.

But, once in a while, when this stuff happens and the madness of lies passing for truth reaches an apex, in the wayyyyy back portion of my mind, I wonder if answering these people with their own medicine wouldn't be righteous. The sweet, seductive vapors of instant and final retaliation float through my body and mind.

Then I stop and remember everything I have ever learned, every action I have ever taken, every thought or word I have spoken and written, the promises I made to myself about what actions I can take that will make me a real "real man" not the cartoon version and I realise that the rational path is the righteous path, and it passes quickly.
