    I generally do not read the NYT because it generally caters to people such as Mr. Emrich. I have new respect for it, at least the Weddings/Celebrations editor, since he stuck to his guns. Sousa and Keen deserved to be admired. They have overcome tremendous odds and that should be applauded. +3

    Mr. Emrich sounds like a pretty old, pretty conservative man. A viewpoint that most people wouldn't categorize as the predominant viewpoint of the NYT. At least, most people would think it was old and LIBERAL.

    Not so sure about conservative though. Most conservatives I know like the 'pull yourself up by your bootstraps and kick ass' story. Not many of us appreciate the stories about Harvard graduates, who are the 3rd generation of attorneys to graduate from that fine institution.

    @Pope John Peeps II: It appears that Emrich was actually an Episcopal Bishop of Michigan at one point.


    Despite being Episcopal, given this link he may lean right.

    As a single Jewish woman of a certain age and with no prospects, I scan this section every week for the words "Rabbi so-and-so officiated..." It gives the impression that the Jewish population of the US is about 50% and gives me hope.

    The Times Wedding section was the best part of the Sunday paper when I was 14. Now I'll just check it out to play "Spot the Mayflower Descendant" or to see if I know anyone, which happens weirdly often. Strangest connection was reading about the wedding of a woman who was my bunkmate at summer camp in 1993.

    My favorite today by far: the cute lesbian couple: Harvard cum laude, JFK School Public Policy Master's, Family Law in SF. But the icing on the cake:



    "(Laure) is the daughter of Viscount Rémi de Reydet de Vulpillières of Crespières, France, and the late Viscountess Elizabeth de Reydet de Vulpillières."



    Oh, I'm rooting for them; they seem full of win- but we all know Phyllis will be the arbitix of that! Which is as it should be.

    Somebody's (great-grandfather's?) achievements, not necessarily the actual bride's or groom's achievements. Quitting heroin or meth is a hell of a greater achievement than degrees from universities with buildings named after your ancestors.
