Most officers and pilots don't mince their words. It was a pleasure to see that this ex-fighter pilot wouldn't engage in Mrs. Couric's flowery rhetoric and obsequious demeanor. She should stick to fawning over Lil Wayne. The best thing about the interview had nothing to do with Couric, but the producers who decided to show the POV/flight path of the troubled bird, the use of the air traffic audio, and the reading of the letters at Sully's home. There was never a thoughtful question about those 90 seconds from Katie. A journalism undergrad could have done a better job. Couric was clearly punching above her weight, and turned a golden opportunity into a coquettish flirtfest.
After skimming through Gawker this morning and seeing the usual: Anna Wintour, a blind article about two actors screwing a sheep, etc...It's a pleasure to listen to Sully.
Quite often, drinking bad wine at another lame book party, Smithhimself finds himself chatting to a "writer" who can't seem to finish his/her own novel but, of course, sneers about everyone else.
Katie Couric flat out ruined the interview for me. Her lipstick is approaching Lesley Stahl levels of distraction and the glazed eyed head nod hurts my soul. Get her outta here. Couldn't we have had Anderson there, one silver fox to another?
Remember it takes 40 years of experience to be able to handle yourself like that. It's part of his job to control his emotions so he can control the aircraft in case of an emergency and have some control over the outcome of an incident of this type. Air traffic controllers are required to behave in a similar manner. This guy is eminently likeable, humble but poised, realistic, kind, conscientious. It all adds up to making the most of one's maturity. Bra-vo, is all I can say.
@CODiva: Did you hear that ATC on the other end of Sullenberger's convo? It was like he wasn't listening! When Sully said "We'll be in the Hudson" the ATC said "What? Say that again?" when you would think he'd have every ounce of his hearing trained on whatever the pilot WITH NO ENGINES was saying, and - knowing LGA was out of the question and Teterboro a long shot - he should have been able to figure out that the Hudson was an option and been alerting EMS.
Sully deserves all the kudos; I thought the ATC guy seemed like those 911 operators you sometimes hear who ask for the address 50 times.
I would love to hear an interview with his children. If every father could be this competent yet modest, we'd have a lot less screwed up kids (I am sort-of afraid of hearing he's a lousy dad and all his efforts went to his career at the expense of his family).
I love that he said he didn't pray! He was busy doing his job. Maybe if the idiots who ran the White House the previous eight years spent less time praying and more time learning to do/then doing their jobs - we wouldn't be in this mess!
He's awesome! And that said, people need to let him get back to his life. We've thanked him, now let the man alone.
@honeybee111: Yes!!! I loved that. I also loved that he avoided the other cliche that Couric threw at him ... that is happened in slow motion. Nope, it just happened and he dealt with it.
@Weegee's bored: Why do interviewers always look for (or, in this case, try to lead to) cliched answers, when they are constantly looking for something "new" and "different" to grab viewers? Isn't it an oxymoron?
@Uncle_Billy_Slumming: Because as George Bush and Sarah Palin have taught us, in order to fight these terrorist birds bent on destroying us and our way of life, you cannot blink.
Am I the only one who thought he could do better, wife-wise? I mean, sure, she's young and pretty and all, but I'm kind of thinking she may not deserve such a cool dude.
@wholenuther: Pretty sure he's a Democrat... at least I assumed so after Couric asked him if he prayed as the plane was going down, and he kind of smirked and said "Maybe someone in the back was taking care of that, while I was trying to do my job."
@wholenuther: Why would you like or dislike a pilot based on how he pulled the lever in the voting booth? This bizarre "I hate all Republicans" thing really unnerves me.
If Sully were gay and wouldn't you expect people to treat him as a hero w/o regard to his sexuality? I find it just as unsettling to hear people on the left talk like you do as the people on the other end of the political spectrum...
@friend_of_a_friend: I like Sully because he seems articulate and intelligent. He is also obviously someone who does not just parrot answers for media's convenience. (As a side note, how much of that interview was left on the cutting room floor because Sully wouldn't give some dumb ass sound byte answer for the tv lady.)
That said, hoping that an intelligent and honorable person may somehow see politics your way is just human nature. We all want the best and brightest to confirm our convictions. Which is why I hope Sully is into snuff films just like me.
@Adah: ergh, I don't know. My father is 67 and has had a moustache since the early 1970s. Not sure he would even be my dad without the 'stache. I say work it, Sully.

Adulthood. It has its advantages. Give it a try.

You just sneered at Gawker, and then sneered at writers who sneer at other writers.
There's an irony party in my pants, and you're invited!
