The Evangelical angle is the one really worrying me -- I agree that the law will slide onto the books and then be mostly ignored, though it's presence is obviously horrible and evil. But what will keep this sort of social engine churning is the flood of evangelical teaching into developing nations.
When I've travelled, sometimes it feels like the only voice from America that's really given credence is the one coming from a church study group, and some of the questions I've been asked are just wild. It's the flipside of "In America, the streets are paved in gold!" -- but instead, it's dire warnings about murder, rape, immorality, and the immigrants and gays. Entire segments of the world have been getting the Teabagger's Guide to America, and believing it because it was condoned by their church.
I just find it remarkable that in the 21st Century we can fit libraries of information onto a chip the size of a head of a pin but we still can't get our collective minds around the concept of consensual people loving and having sex with whomever they wish.
I truly see homophobia as the last bastion of group scapegoating... well until the Prawns catch a terrestrial flat tire above South Africa and are forced to live in a Soweto slum.
Are we getting prepped for another adventure in the Middle East? We had a bad impression of Iran to begin with, and now we are even more revolted by them than we are by the financial thugs. This happened just as Iran supposedly rejected our extended hand.
We clearly need to engage the Iranian government in meaningful dialogue. Let them know "we intend to mean business at some point if you keep this up for long enough by gum!"
In other news, American blogger Perez Hilton died in a KFC restroom on Wednesday. Authorities claim he'd chicken fingered himself to death. That is probably not a lie.
Let it never be said that I don't give credit when/where credit is due.
Hillary Clinton deserves credit for this, and for (hopefully) ignoring the insipid ranting of amateur lobbyist and armchair general Mort Zuckerman, among other clowns.
