The Clintons very regularly attended the Foundry United Methodist Church in DC while he was president. I think they actually were/are genuine "church people."
Funny story: my (pretty, blond) friend attended the same church and saw them all the time. One Sunday, she was sitting by the center aisle as the Clintons were walking up it. Bill sees her, makes eye contact, starts smiling. Soon they're both smiling at each other. Then she notices Hillary... scowling.
@Claire Buoyant: What about Christian Scientists (who, until recently, I thought Scientologists were)? I'm all out of 'credible' religions, but Catholics do have the coolest churches...
@Vivien Smith-Smythe-Smith: And they use fishing nets to collect offerings instead of plates! Or the one cathedral I ever went to did. And this was in the late 80s.
@apocalypse-nowish: Whoa, really? When I was a child, we used to go to the Anglican Mass if we slept in (which was more or less every weekend), and they used this weird dark blue velvet sack thing with dark wooden handles. It made the whole thing seem rather ostentatiously ceremonious, but apparently it was so that nobody else could see what others were donating, or something. Those English; always so considerate!
"What if Barack Obama is actually a mild-mannered upwardly mobile college professor from an upper-middle class neighborhood with fairly standard-issue yuppie family values?"
Whaddya mean "what if?" Who the hell were the rest of you guys voting for?
The Sidwell Friends thing is such a disappointment. Barry could have made a HUGE statement about his commitment to public schools.
How can we be OK with a situation where urban public schools are openly considered unsuitable for respectable people? How is that not more of an outrage? As an American, it's just embarrassing. We might as well just come out and tell the thousands of DC schoolkids that they're doomed... and no one gives a shit.
@Botswana Meat Commission FC: well i mean don't you think it's better to TELL THEM than to pretend otherwise? c'mon. there's a multitude of reasons as to why the obamas' decision is defensible, ending with "anyone who uses their kids to make huge statements about their political beliefs should not have had kids"
@Botswana Meat Commission FC: There's more practical reasons for choosing Sidwell: they've got recent experience having a President's kid @ the school, so they are well versed in Secret Service protocols and etc. They've got far fewer kids than your local public school, hence, far people to worry about. It's smaller, more secure, etc. etc. etc.
At the end of the day, dude needs to do what's best for his kids TODAY. Do you really expect him to essentially say "I have never had any impact over the DC schools, and any educational policy I pass will likely not be felt at the local level for another decade, but I will send my children to a poorly performing school to demonstrate to people that I am not a hypocrite"? Come on, now. No parent would do that.
If the logistical argument were true, then that's defensible, but has anyone seriously suggested that sending them to public school would somehow be beyond the scope of the secret service's abilities? If so, I haven't read that anywhere.
@Botswana Meat Commission FC: Security at a public school wouldn't be impossible, but it would be more difficult than at Sidwell. Sidwell also offered more privacy. When Amy Carter went to public school, she was not allowed to go outside for recess because of both security and privacy.
@Unfun: It's bizarre, but during the election I could more easily engage in this sort of speculation. Now that he's president-elect, it feels kind of like talking about my parents' sex life.
Still. My guess is that he can really talk dirty, but once he actually gets you in bed he's more conventional than you'd expect.
Dude, I came this close to slitting my wrists and stabbing myself in the head within 30 seconds of playing that clip. Jesus H. Christ. I fucking hate Fox & Friends.
You know damn well that elitist windbag thinks Palin is nothing but trash. She's got to be either a stone-cold racist, insane or both to even appear somewhere supporting Sarah Palin.
Yo, blondie - while you're boning up (fnar) on history, you might learn we tossed out peerage in 18th century. You can't put "Lady" in front of anything but "fruit," now. It's the law.

They were voting for the Lefty Unicorn of their Dreams and/or the Cool Black Friend they always wished they had back in college.
Sigh. Even when the American public does the right thing, they do it for a totally embarrassing stupid reason.
