As a Minnesotan, I welcome our new Canadian overlords, but I expect that Washington state would go to Canada as well, just based on the fact that their largest city (and the majority of their population) borders one of Canada's most important cities, Vancouver. Montana will go rougue. Michigan will be part of the "dirt highway" bringing cheap labor from the southern states up to New Canada. I also predict that China will have no problem with Utah bringing polygamy back, and so they'll be fine with this little arrangement.

OMG! Everyone go out and buy the Firefly complete series. I swear this is the reason why in the future the entire world knows Mandarin. I'm telling you Joss Whedon is a large-craniumed genius.

No, really, just go out and buy the box set (we may get a sequel to Serenity, if you do...not that that's the reason why you should own it) and um, don't mind all that stuff about men evolving into rapist savages. I'm sure that only happens much, much, later.

    I think it would be
    1. The country of New England and New York.
    2. O'Washingfornia.
    3. Texas, Goddamit.
    4. The Independent socialist Republic of Austin.
    5. New Sweden (Formerly Minnesota).
    6. AC Chicago.
    7. Mormonia.
    8. The pathetic and mostly poor, dishevelled masses of states that used to suck teat off of the Federal government, with their capital city of Omaha-on-Jesus.

@BaconCat: Actually, Austin is really not that weird. The weird part of Austin is more like a small, musically inclined ethnic enclave of predominantly white emos and southern hipsters hemmed in by frat houses, fast food restaurants, cul-de-sacs, parking lots and highways.

But North and South Carolina are also part of the Texas Republic judging from the buses traveling between there and the Mexican border.

As someone who grew up in Michigan 30 miles from the Canadian border, I was under Canadian influence every weekend from my 19th birthday until the weekend before I turned 21. Cheap legal booze and Karaoke, eh!

    "richer states like California"

    Isn't CA broke?

@Crabbie: From a technical standpoint, yes. But it's due to spending too much rather than not generating enough revenue in the first place. Actually, that's problematic, too, because so much of the state's money depends on taxes on really super high end earners, like tech bajillionaires, and tech keeps exploding. But given that CA gets 1 USD back from the feds for ever 2 or 3 it sends to DC, seceding would free up some cash.

So if we're called Atlantic America, does that mean we can start using clever puns involving 'AA'? As in 'AA's don't go to rehab'?

I would welcome my Mexican overlords, but I am pretty sure they are already here, hanging out in the Home Depot parking lot - just waiting for the signal from the motherland.
