Well, then, star, you and I had a brief, lovely good time, some dances in the rain, some nattering debates with other dorks about rape games on Kotaku, a few drinks too many at that bar after foolishly getting drawn into the relative merits of Katy Perry and the perceived sins of her fauxsexuality. It was never a particularly deep relationship, but you looked good in those jeans, you really did.

In mostly seriousness, reading "The Rookies" blog info on all this, I feel this makes a certain amount of sense... these blogs, especially the super popular ones, whom I suspect are the engines of this (Jezebel, Gizmodo, etc - Gawker itself has a different, more social feel, which is often nice), dissolve into anarchy in the comments sections so quickly it renders them often useless. It's become a sport... I agree with that author, on those blogs, is there much value-added?

I'm not sure if I agree with the 'scary' suggestion, however, about it's losing touch. Unlike ESPN, it's still a blog. If it doesn't stay fleet and sleek and on top of it's informational game, other blogs will take it's eyeballs, and it'll suffer. Different animal.

Lastnight, Deadspin's DUAN post provided the following link that ostensibly is a preview Gawker media's new look and comment system come Monday:

One of the most significant commenting changes is that only starred commenters will be visible when you initially scroll down to the comments section of the post.

As for my 2 cents, any blog that would star me is a blog I would want to read.

You have to give Deadspin credit. When someone found the key to their pages in progress and published screenshots of the new format, they didn't go all Sarah Palin and demand he take it down. They just dealt with it, changed the URLs, and actually linked to the post with the secret previews.

The lesson (to the rest of the Internet) being that if you're going to make big changes, you may as well be as open about it as possible.

I will confess, and I swear this is true, I actually used my star to engineer myself into the Webby after-party at the Hiro Ballroom a few weeks ago while on an overnight layover in NYC en route to Edinburgh. So take it from me, it already has massive IRL powers!

I was going to see if it can get me into the Emmy's, we'll see what Monday brings! :[]

@lobstr: We shouldn't be worried. If they take away our stars, we have recourse to the official Gawker ombudsman, American Dreamer. He'll initiate an independent investigation and convene an independent committee that will investigate the evidence gained. They will be especially looking at the quality, relevance and quantity of our comment portfolios (incl. the number of suspected instances of drunken commenting), our collegiality and the number of times we have said "Oh, that's hilarious!" or a variant thereof, to determine whether to reverse the astral revocation by the site's editor(s).

@i'm a bottle: I would venture that ninety percent of my commenting is drunken. The remaining ten percent is hungover commenting. I would also guess that whoever approved my commenting was either drunk or hungover. I will gladly sacrifice my star if the other option is to remain sober.
