@slainte_pants: In no way was I saying that being rich makes one a douche. I was referring to a good portion of the people I have known in the financial, especially when they are younger and are trying to fashion themselves as junior Geckos.

New York wasn't always bottle service and overwrought Asian fusion. I'd be ok with that taking a hit.

i think the future of wall street is going to be small boutique outfits where the bankers don't have to answer to shareholders and eat what they kill

citigroup is a perfect example. all of the rainmakers are leaving because they won't get bonuses and are weighed down by all of citigroup's baggage.

@Never Stop Dancing: There's a lot of sense to that model for, say, mergers and acquisitions advice and other intellect-driven specialties. But a boutique operation won't ever have the kind of balance sheet needed to carry big deals through. There's too big to fail, and there's also too small to matter.

i was thinking a smaller boutique could operate like a hedge fund and get private investors (instead of public shareholders) to fund it in an amount sufficient to provide bridge financing or whatever else is required

@Never Stop Dancing: Even Citigroup is talking about a model where it doesn't deploy its balance sheet to win investment-banking deals. So perhaps that's the future. Someone's going to have to reinvent the finance business, because the current one's not looking very good.
