In reply to Steve Jobs and the Power of Refusing Reality
it is his own body which has proven resistant to his formidable power to reshape the world.

Gawd, that's about the most mawkish thing I've ever read! At least let the poor bastard die before you embalm him in schmaltz!

So Steve Jobs has been been irresponsibly denying Steve Jobs the medical treatments that might have saved Steve Jobs' life?

I think that horrible. How could Steve Jobs do such a thing?

If Steve Jobs dies, he'll have no one but Steve Jobs to blame. And then, for the rest of his life, Steve Jobs will have to live with the guilt of having caused his own death.

It's a bit early to be skimming the files for his obituary. And FYI, those examples you give to justify your assertion that Jobs has hubris: They all seem like incredibly forward-thinking innovations from a remarkable man.

I'm not an Apple girl, but I know when credit is due. Hope he gets better.

I wish him the best, but as someone who covered Jobs for years, worse than being fast-and-loose with the truth is the fact that he studiously never groomed a successor. He was, I think paranoid at the prospect of ever losing his baby again (as if that could ever happen). His bad to the Apple shareholders, who are in a fine mess to come up with a replacement who is cult.

These are interesting observations, but they presume to come from a place inside his head that none of us have access to. I think it's still a little too early to try to mold him into a mythical character, equipped with the stock dramatic motivations.

But I could just be coming from an emotional place right now. Either way, let's not bury him before he's dead.

We cannot claim to know that Steve Jobs the man has been living in a state of denial about the truth of his health.

The public announcements of public company and public figure —

    however confusing, outrageous, counterfactual —

these are not the man’s private thoughts.

@iplaudius: There is also nothing wrong with living in denial about declining health. It's very natural. I was in denial for about 3 months that I couldn't stop losing weight because of an illness. It wasn't until I hit 99 pounds that I realized I needed to make life changes.
