A distinction that should be made here is the distinction between "mainstream" porn -- gay and straight -- and everything else. I am under the impression that the LA Times statistics are taken from the only segment of the porn industry that is professional enough to keep records and to voluntarily take tests and submit those results. Considering the proliferation of amateur porn -- excluding "amateur porn" actually made by the AIM-type, professional producers, directors, actors, etc -- I also have a hard time believing that it's only 22 cases across "the porn industry" taken as a whole to include every swinging dick with a digital video recorder, a web server, and a PayPal account.

@markscottmusic: That number is actually wrong--it includes, among other things, the original six performers infected in 2004, and people who were tested because they wanted to be adult performers, and were not hired because of a positive test result. The real number of actively working pornstars who've been infected with HIV since Darren James is, uh, 1--the Patient Zero in question (and, potentially, anyone she may have infected--though currently all her partners are testing negative).

And yes, that's far, far below the national average.
