@ithabeleng metesunyane: JD Salinger wrote other stories about Holden and his siblings. You can find them on the internet; someone typed them up from old magazines and uploaded them.
@ithabeleng metesunyane: He and Esther Greenwood got married and died in a horrible boating accident. I actually meant to write that as a short story in my teens. I guess I'm lucky that I didn't.
That J.D. Salinger, he always seemed kind of flitty to me. I don't know him and all, but, boy, he kills me. He really goddamn does. Old Salinger. What a prince. If I were a writer, I wouldn't even let myself publish anything. If I even tried, I'd sue my own goddamn self. I really would. I'm a madman sometimes.
@The Dominant Glee Club: I hearted you both but that's because I'm a damn phoney. Sure I get all happy when I read stuff but in my real life I'm mean and grumpy and beat my kids and smoke too much.
@Astroblack: He's a bit of an urban legend in New Hampshire, akin to the boogeyman or whatever it is that is totally hiding under your bed but is only there when the lights are off.
Like a 1960s movie about hippies, and Salinger himself, Catcher just doesn't hold up to a modern day read. It's sophomoric, self-indulgent and just plain ridiculous.
@1.1.1.: Exactly--I have no beef with Salinger for this. The beauty of Catcher in the Rye is the carefully crafted character of Holden Caulfield. He's the whole book, not to mention an icon. For someone else to seize and distort that creation just seems incredibly wrong.
@DahlELama: Yeah, but you know what? I'm sure California's book stinks. STINKS. So it probably doesn't matter if it's published because it probably stinks. And I feel for that judge.
Hearted for the Jean Rhys reference. Oh man. That book is better than Jane Eyre.

I always wondered what happened to him in his later years.
Now I may never know.

If you want to pay homage to an author, write a fan novel and post it on your website. Don't charge for it.
Or wait until the writer has been dead a long time, as with Jean Rhys and Charlotte Brontë. It helps to be brilliant.
