This only upholds my belief that most actors are insecure, shallow people. I know not all actors are Scientologists, nor does the reverse hold true, but the "Church" apparently likes to use celebrities for publicity purposes. As a committed non-believer, I have no sympathy for any religion, but this cult is different. No other major religion I have ever encountered has the audacity to charge its members for "religious" instruction. I pity them all. #scientology

@alboy2: Well, there is the Kabbalah study group that Madonna does or did frequent. You move up according to how much money you spend. This is similar to Scientology and I think it is one of the attractions for the wealthy and famous. They don't have to practice their religion among the great unwashed but have the special privileges that they know they deserve.

Also private schools linked to churchs such as the Catholic Church, Jewish schools, Christian Schools are soliciting money to educate their students in the faith. #scientology

Many celebrities have taken classes in the past, but most bolted.Chaka left long ago and whatever they have on her she must not care. Then again , she tired to make out with Tracey Morgan, so go figure. Brandy was not really "in" They fucked up by not assigning a handler on her or she would have been a great catch. Oprah's ass was/is in and they have the goods on her as well. Will is so in , he is just waiting for his grandmother to pass so that he can "come out".. Jada has been in for a long time and she is more open to claiming it. Will's son with his first wife attended regular school but his kids with Jada were all home schooled until they opened they Scientology school .Usher was sort of "in" with his wife who has been a Scientologist for a while, he did that water purification bs benefit for them in Vegas. Doug E.Fresh is so in and Tom Cruise joined him on BET-this was part of that minority outreach program . Haywood Nelson-Michael from Good TImes- has been in forever. Persia White was born in, she was very active but now that she married a non-member she seems to be inactive. Al Jarreau is another one that I believe is still in. Apparently the Aussie billionaire Packer is supposed to be out of it. I am worried about that guy from the Office marrying the Made Men Scientologist . Damn near the whole Y&R and bold & beautiful cast is in . #scientology

I used to know some high-profile ex-members, and they claimed to know for a fact that the church has "gay stuff" on Travolta and Cruise. It may have been a ploy for attention, or they may have had access to the auditing files -- as I understand it, security isn't quite as rigorous on those as the church implies. Of course, they use auditing information against ex-members, but I believe it's also pretty easy for a member in good standing to wander in and have a peek at someone else's file.

At this point in their careers, I think a revelation of homosexuality would be less damaging than their continued association with the church -- but I doubt they see it that way.

What are the odds on Travolta, Cruise, or someone else with finance and position trying to stage a takeover and oust Miscavige? That might be more palatable than leaving, especially since they've invested so much (financially and otherwise).

Good gravy at the people freaking out about Chaka Khan and Beck. You all are going to have coronaries when I tell you Elizabeth Moss, television's Peggy Olson, is a Scientologist as well, I suppose.

I don't get the mystical hate for Scientology. Or at least not entirely. On the one hand, it's a shitty religion that makes a lot of money off of people. On the other hand, most religions are shitty and make a lot of money off of people. Is it because it's modern and these people should "know better?" Or because there are public deaths associated with it, even though that's also true of other religions? Is it because you don't have to worry about offending someone on the street who is maybe crazy about their orthodox Catholicism, Judaism, all other -isms? It's like this mystical tie that binds all of us and unites us as Americans, and I suppose that's all the evidence I need to know that it's pure evil. #scientology

@Kayleigh R. Carter: I wasn't saying it wasn't bad, I was just saying I can't figure out why people are comfortable publicly talking about how insane and cuckoo it is, but don't think the Christ birth or any of the other major religions are just as insane and cuckoo. Or how most religions have blatant child abuse, financial scandals, zealotry, and bigotry in any number of forms bonded to the DNA of their organizations. I was curious if anybody had anything to say not necessarily about why it is that everyone seems incredibly comfortable saying it's an awful religion, but why they feel so comfortable saying it about this particular but not other religions.

Thank you for not answering that, introducing a straw man argument, and talking to me condescendingly. #scientology

@ampersandparade: As an atheist, I will say that it bothers me when religious people bash Scientology, or Mormonism, etc. It does seem unfair. My distaste for CoS is sort of a blanket distaste for what this kind of thing can represent, and that's basically duping people into BELIEVING what you are selling, often with blatant disregard for science. In most cases, information exists that belies the teachings; it seems more about 'holding onto how it makes them feel'.

With the CoS, the leap of faith isn't there, so it's just way more ridiculous-seeming. I mean, scroll through those pictures and try to not feel creeped out. #scientology

L Ron didn't start Scientology as a religion. So when did he decide that it was a religion? What was the catalyst?
And why are they so secretive about their religous practices?
I question any religion that is exclusive - even the Mormons have exclusivity that you can only be part of some things if you were born into Mormonisn, converting to Mormonism isn't good enough. Don't you think that is odd?

@kathotdog006: I don't like Scientology. I think it is abyssmal, I think it is a thesis on religion as science fiction (and in this case quite literally). But I think most religions have an air of exclusivity. In most sects of Christianity there is the belief that if you aren't Christian, you will not ascend to heaven. Is that not inclusive as well? It may not be as outwardly controlling, and certainly the Catholic or Protestant churches never tried to stage an infiltration of the United States government, but I still fail, entirely, what makes it so greatly different from the rest of the church-attending lot to draw such ire. People have died; they are cut off from their families; they have their money swindled from them; children are subject to physical and sexual abuse; adults are punished physically for not conforming to the notions the church has put forward as what is Right for Living. This is true of most religious sects.

I think it deserves scorn, just not out of balance to other things. But I do greatly appreciate that you, and others, question why someone would require exclusivity to an organization for the worship of a deity that, by origin of the church's teachings, existed before the church's creation. #scientology

@ampersandparade: First off, Scientology harasses people who try to leave in a manner akin to High School bullying, I don't believe the Mormons picket ex-members front yards with derogatory signs, nor do they crank call ex-members mothers with anonymous phone calls. Other religions also don't make it a blatant habit of wooing Hollywood. Hollywood makes it open for satire.

@pony_express: Actually LDS members who leave the church are harassed by their local Bishopric and stake. If they have the nerve to write about their objections to the religion they are especially persecuted. Some ex members have gone into hiding as a result of leaving the church.

But abuse can occur whenever someone who belongs to a group then leaves that group. And by tacit understanding rather than by specific rule many questioners or apostates are cut off by church members in any sect. #scientology

@Conchie Birdie: A year or so ago, Vanity Fair did a long feature article on those two NY artists who killed themselves, one after the other. The couple had gotten involved with Scientology while in LA, and an interesting sidebar to the story was that they told people Beck wanted to leave the Church at the time... #scientology

    Here's the relevant excerpt:

Beck’s involvement in Scientology was unconfirmed to the public until 2005, when he acknowledged his affiliation in an interview with The New York Times, lauding the sect for its work with illiterate kids and drug addicts. His father, musician David Campbell, who lives in Los Angeles, is also a Scientologist, as is his wife, Marissa.

According to Duncan, sometime in their two-year acquaintance, Beck expressed to her and Blake a desire to leave the church, and they had offered him encouragement and even assistance. "That’s ridiculous. Totally false," Beck said. "Had we been closer and discussed anything as personal as religion, I would have only had positive things to say about Scientology."

Duncan e-mailed a friend in late 2006: "[Beck] really, really tried to get away … using going to NY to be in Alice Underground.… He told me he wanted to leave the cult desperately, and this is what they do when someone knows that." She was referring here to her perception that the Church of Scientology had been harassing her and Blake. "Never heard of these people. This is completely untrue," Scientology spokeswoman Karin Pouw told the Los Angeles Times.
