@BowlingForDollars: Seeing as NBC put this on with the implication of not caring about ratings but instead just looking to lower overhead and production costs, I would advise drawing this idea in crayon on a piece of glittery construction paper and then receiving your gold star from the network heads for a job well done.
This whole experience has absolutely capped his career and handicapped NBC. Amazing.
I can't imagine Jay being overly happy with this situation. Steering a ship that's going nowhere while watching Conan struggle to get his head above water is going to lead to him ditching the show and waiting for Fox to give him a massive contract.
@DennyCrane: To be honest, I think the Leno brand is beyond sale at this point, and I don't see Fox trying to break in to the talk show racket anytime soon. Of course, what the hell does Fox even air at 11:30? Cops? Can't be Cops. Cops would kill Conan in ratings. And I love Conan.
It doesn't matter if Leno's numbers go down to 0.01 (his wife watching); NBC has nothing ready to replace him at 10PM other than more L&O reruns. He will last at least through his one-season contract no matter what happens. After that, the real chaos will begin.
Ok, I didn't watch last night and I don't know when that pic up there is from, but Jesus Christ. Why didn't I appreciate this woman when I was like 15? Has she actually gotten more attractive now that she's 48 or whatever?
MP needs to find some interesting characters immediately. We already know Augie and Lipsyncha are going, but the blond guy and the doctor/whore are boresville as well. The "normal" couple are boring, but they are supposed to be, so they should stay. The only interesting character, at least from a nighttime soap perspective, is the lesbian "bitch." A character like Christian Siriano would be a great addition. Someone with a mysterious quasi-military role would be interesting. Likewise, a Persian JAP. And make it more like David Lynch's Mullholland Drive.
@jimstoic: Is she actually a lesbian? Might have missed something, but I just figured from last night's girl/girl snog that she's just someone who knows which cards to play and when.
@terrible: I'm pretty sure she's supposed to be bi; she obviously enjoys the males, as evidenced by her love for the boring man, but they also had her hooking up with a girl at a party in one of the earliest episodes.
So, which is it? Heather Locklear increases Melrose ratings by 15% last night and it's a dismal failure. Jay Leno is up 5% and Wow!
As I recall, she is credited with saving the show the first time round when ratings were low. I highly doubt she did it overnight - after but one appearance.
@shle896: I guess it depends on the numbers you're starting out with, but fifteen percent seems like a decent percentage to me. Give Amanda a little more credit!
Keep in mind that you could probably have clipped those same headlines from 1994 when Dave was beating Leno in the head to head ratings, and we all know how that turned out.
The press has always been anti-Jay Leno, with much hipster love for Letterman. (I don't really like either Jay or Dave. Conan forever!) The tone of just about every media column from the last decade has always been "How can that hack Leno be wiping the floor with our beloved Dave? HOW!?!?!?"
NBC probably shouldn't have messed with a good thing in the first place, but now that they've committed to this they should stick it out for at least a full year.
Besides, what would they put on there? Law and Order reruns? Dateline 5 nights a week? #jayleno
They will limp along with him until next spring and fulfill the contract, mainly because they have no other new programming to replace it. The point of Leno at 10 was to save money on expensive pilots. Oops!
If the news breaks that they have a new game show ready to premiere, that will be the end of Leno, since it's the only other kind of programming that will cost them as much or less.
I believe the Leno Experiment has not only eliminated NBC at ten, but it has probably dragged down their nine o'clock shows and has negatively effected viewership on all networks, across the board.
I know that I've found myself deciding not to sit down for a 9pm show, a couple of times a week because there'd be nothing coming after it, so why bother?

When the unemployment rate hits 10%, is that like the opposite for TV programmers? The get to hire 10% of the idiots they owe a favor to? #jayleno
