Did you notice the comments to that Finke piece on her site? Is she syndicated on Newsmax or something? My favorite is about all the bad apples being in one place. Yikes!

So, for a State Dinner for 500 people, these three SKG founders are problematic because they were Democratic donors in the 1990's and oh my God they still are?

Maybe he gave the seats to these "Clinton retreads" because they are still quite powerful players in Hollywood and oh, still huge Democratic donors.

The 1990's aren't quite the ancient history you seem to think they are.

@Baroness: Tell that to Spielberg's box office receipts. As far as they're concerned, the 1990s were a long, long time ago.

They're making a Percy Jackson movie? Why? And for the love of Pete, Chris Colombus you have ruined too many perfectly good movies already.

The horrific part has been realizing that these people are like, "Oh whatever, that wasn't my personal wealth, and I can refill the tank on that charity no problem."

Seriously, I read a quote of hiswhere he was like, "Meh, $10Million whatever...I'm not really caring about this right now because I just got home from the Bahamas where I basically rented the Jonas Brothers for my daughter for the weekend."

F*ck this sh*t, no one needs this much money. Ever. *Poof* I think I just became a communist.

I gotta be honest--one of the people who lost the most money is one of my friends' dads, and I've been in three of his homes, envied his daughter's designer clothing, and wished I could own just one of his multi-zillion dollar works of art, but you know what? I still feel bad for the guy. Because when it happens to people you know, and especially to nice guys with nice families who give a ridiculous amount of charity, it's a lot harder to pass it off to yourself as just another example of the rich getting what they deserve.

@DahlELama: I feel bad for anyone unfairly used or victimized.

But, at the same time, there are many millions of victims, and more by the day, of the snowballing financial disaster surrounding us--a disaster still far from the nadir that is largely if not exclusively the result of greedy and unscrupulous financial operators at the highest levels self-dealing at the expense of the many. The ones most deserving of our sympathy are those who will literally lose their ability to feed, house, and clothe themselves and their families. Those who will lose their health and dignity, lose loved ones. Those who will, yes, straight up die.

Never forget--and hopefully never find out firsthand: there's a big difference between "losing everything" and LOSING EVERYTHING.

Not everyone who was fucked over by this guy was wealthy. A friend of mine was convinced by her grandparents to invest most of the money she made from the sale of her home into a fund that was controlled by Madoff. It is now gone. She saved up money bartending for seven years in New York and now is living in her parents' basement in Sarasota. No, she's not homeless, but she isn't rich, was never rich, and is now suffering. This affects a lot more than the super wealthy.

I was watching The Pursuit Of Happyness last night, so forgive me if I don't care if this crowd is feeling less wealthy today. Perhaps NYT can write a Neediest Cases article about it. What luxury will they be forced to give up?

I'm sorry it's hard for me to give a damn when rich bastards get ripped off. Charities would not be in their interest if it weren't a huge tax break.

What we do need is more of a Robin Hood right now.

@freiburg: I was responding to Cheap Shot's comment. As for Elie Wiesel, his charity does not exist for the primary purpose of providing tax breaks to rich people. A latent effect, but not a primary one.
