What the rest of the country doesn't seem to understand is that favors are the local currency of Chicago. I can't even get on the train in the morning without giving at least a handjob beforehand.
It's undoubtably a federal crime. Anyone who's been to law school knows that you can make ANYTHING into a federal crime. Just ask Congress about the Commerce Clause (zing!).
Thank you for adding some sense to this story, Pareene! This is the first article I've seen that puts it all into context, politically and legally, and then logically asks, WTF? Fitz may have had honorable intentions but they were outside his official duties.
A lot of what is in the complaint sounds like politics to me. It was just shocking to see it all put together on paper. As crass as it all sounds, this is politics, we just don't usually get to read it or hear it.
I'm reminded of that line by the judge in Blow "Your Honor, really, all I did was cross an imaginary line with a bunch of plants!" "Unfortunetly, the line that you crossed is very real, and the plants that you were transporting happen to be illegal."
