Whoa whoa whoa... The conservative 'fantasy' of schoolchildren being brainwashed has little or nothing to do with Obama's speech, and everything thing to do with pretty much every public school teacher in the country (and certainly the major cities) being a card-carrying liberal, along with documented cases of liberal bias in textbooks and undeniable (and indefensible) regular occurrences of discrimination against conservative thought on college campuses.
@Thomas Paladino: When you say "pretty much every", what exactly is that? 90%? 95%? There's about 3 million public school teachers in the US, so that'd be...how many, exactly? I'm not so great at math (public school education--ha!).
Also, while we're on the subject, what do you mean when you say "card-carrying"? I'm sure this is a metaphor, because I know that, as a liberal, I was never issued a card. How many liberal policies do you have to support in order to be a liberal? If you vote for Barack Obama, does that make you a liberal? Also, as a public school teacher, aren't you obligated to teach according to the curriculum standards that your district gives you? Standards which are determined by the district heads, who are themselves elected by the community?
Or are you talking, specifically, about that big survey that they did, where they asked all the public school teachers in America what their political affiliation was? What was that survey called? I don't remember the name of it.
And, I guess, uh...just to be clear, you can't really be using college campuses as an example of brainwashing schoolchildren, right? You weren't really serious about that, right? Because in the first place, by the time you're in college you're supposed to be past the effective age of brainwashing, and in the second place, you're not legally bound to go to a particular college, or even to college in general.
And, just for the sake of argument, I'd like to see the documentation regarding the regular occurrences of discrimination against conservative "thought" (I put that in quotation marks, so that you way you can include not just conservative thought, but stupid conservative shit too, like putting creationism into the science curriculum, if you want). Just to see if I could defend it.
@Thomas Paladino: Or it could be that conservatives, unlike liberals, are so much more prone to brainwashing that they fear the same weakness in their offspring.
I didn't know Glenn Beck was a Mormon, so I read that and thought, "Oh, that explains at least a few things." Then I googled it and read that he actually converted as a consenting adult and thought, "Ohhhhh, that explains a lot more."
It will be up to The New Yorker to do the takedown. And then nobody but the elites will read it. Ah, for the old days under Henry Luce, when Time was openly right-wing. It may have been crap in its politics, but it invented a new writing style, it was religious about facts, and it didn't put you to sleep. Read the archives sometime.
It think he was hungry or cooking when he wrote this: "The creamy notions of postpartisan cooperation — poured abundantly over Obama's presidential campaign a year ago — have curdled into suspicion and feelings of helplessness."
"...a video camera, a device that creates a record of objective reality..."
Really? Koyaanisqatsi, for example, was shot with some kind of video camera. And I don't know if I'd call it objective, despite the fact that it's showing images that are clearly really there.
On a vaguely related note, the whole film is now on Youtube, and this blows my mind.
