What I love is that this comes on the heels of a vacation and Congressional recess. There are a lot of things I have been disappointed with in regards to Obama, but the last thing I expected from him when I punched his name on the ballet last November was that the Great Orator would have such a public relations nightmare. I suppose we should never underestimate the ability for a vocal minority to take over the news cycle but, also, sadly, take into account at just how easily a "centrist" Democratic administration succumbs to public pressure by the far-right. The public option is probably dead now, there is still nowhere on the schedule for the repeal of DOMA or Don't Ask, Don't Tell.
I don't look forward to his speech Wednesday. The last time he got in front of the cameras to discuss the reformation of health care, everyone talked about racism in the Ivy Leagues. This man needs to get on message like gangbusters, damn.
I live and work in Loudoun County, VA, one of the jurisdictions which decided not to air the president's speech in our public schools because, as both the school system spokesperson and one of the school board members said, it's "poor timing" and teachers "don't have time" to stop what they're doing on that, the most important first day of school. Wayde Byard, the spokesman, went on to say because the speech would be delivered at noontime and the students would be at lunch that airing the speech would be a "logistical nightmare," but that it would be posted on the Web, where "teachers could later use it in civics lessons."
Of course, he was careful to point out on several occasions that the decision had nothing to do with "censoring or banning the president, it's just a bad time for us."
mmm hmm. Even though Loudoun County and Virginia in total went for Obama last November- to say this were a "blue" area or state would be an affront to reality. There are soooo many conservatives in this area- I have a feeling, though Byard said he has received parental comments both "pro and con," this had a bit more to do with avoiding potential ire at airing Obama's speech than time issues.
Note to parents: the way to raise a thoughtful, intelligent individual who can make his own decisions is NOT to insulate him from every viewpoint that you THINK may be contrary to yours.
And also, stop relying on schools and tv to raise your children. Let them be exposed to the world and them talk to them, guide them, lead by example. YOU are the only parents your child has.
if we do end up becoming a socialist country, it'll be because these idiots have so utterly destroyed any faith in the advantages of a democratic governing system.
no, i don't want their votes to count the same as mine. no, i don't want people like michelle bachmann in a body of elected representatives. there's a time and place for their marginalia, but it shouldn't be in the MSM every goddamned day.
someone please just take the reigns and pull some singapore-style benevolent dictatorship already. i'll accept the occasional caning if it means it means i don't have to pay for the stitches.
I'm no political strategist, but one small piece of advice. Stop reaching across the aisle, understand that those shitheads will hate you regardless, and just do what's right.
i'd say that people swayed by that deserve what they get, but people are talking about keeping kids out of the reach of the president's message on reading and writing and arithmetic
i remember the big black and white tv being wheeled into the lunchroom so we could be indoctrinated into watching space program launches. it was the most awesome thing in the world.
Conservatives don't have a problem with Obama talking to kids. They have a problem with Obama doing in a way that completely bypasses the parents. They also have a problem with the DEA politicizing it by asking teachers to have children write letters about how they can help the president. 1991 when Bush senior did the same thing, the Democrats complained loudly - and they were right to!
I would have less of a problem if this was done during prime time when parents could watch it with their children and talk about it afterwards and if the first version of the teachers' lesson plan looked more like the second.
The president talking to kids is not the issue... the issue is the way that the administration went about it.
@princess_peach: yeah, real dangerous for the president to talk to the kids without the parents around. he'll probably encourage them to murder their folks or something. by the way, all sorts of things are said to kids every day while their parents are not around--by teachers. some of those teachers even encourage kids to stay in school ,work hard, and try to succeed. this whole attack obama for every fucking thing he does is getting tiresome, and your rationale reads like the talking points of, oh, just about every idiotic, paranoiac right wing website.
@princess_peach: Oh yes, God forbid the President talk to kids about staying in school and getting an education. I sure wouldn't want my kids getting that type of message! Last thing we need in this country is more of that fancy book larnin'.
This is such bullshit. And is only happening because the president is black. Where were these creeps when Reagan addressed the school kids on tax cuts? Watching adoringly, I'm sure. [www.duggback.com]
take your kids out of school for good, please and teach them all the stone age essentials you want. We don't need their "free-market" asses clogging up our inefficient socialist public schools. *dusts off hands* Problem solved!
