I saw the Liddy interview on Hardball. Even that old loon was having trouble expressing much enthusiasm for the birther point of view -- Matthews hit him with real evidence and he just crumpled.

You have to be careful what you say to highly armed people who think saving little fetus angels is their jihad. I'm all for free speech, but when somebody insights violence and is unapologetic about egging on murderers, in a just world he would at least lose his contract. I mean, shit, an NBA player get docked a bah-zillion dollars for saying a curse word!

In reply to How to Crush Bill O'Reilly
Wow. There are some really dumb comments here. Wishing a painful death on O'Reilly? Not only is that lazy, but also playing on the same base level as you claim him to reside. I don't like the guy either, so I don't watch his show. Easy enough. It's nice to see some can have a reasoned debate with an attempt to provide facts, and then concede an argument when those facts are proven tainted or just plain wrong. It would be nice if O'Reilly could show that kind of humanity. But he doesn't, and probably never will, so I'm not going to concern myself with him (aside from occasional bemusement). "Let's have a party when he dies! We'll get kegs!" That is embarrassingly juvenile, but even worse, it's not funny. If you're going to play dirty, be funny about it. I thought that was a rule here. Who wants that kind of idiocy on their side? Gawker, it's time for a reboot.

@fiveinchtaint: Could not agree more! It's talk radio with moving pictures, people, and it exists purely to sell you Extenze, Hits of the 80s, and that rub-on headache thing.

You may as well get worked up about what Heidi said to Kim behind Lauren's back on some reality show - it'll have the exact same impact. And you'll be looking at more attractive people...

Personally, I prefer my time-wasting online time to be about pretty people and trivial issues.

Why has this thread been hijacked into a discussion about the ethics of the particular legal service George Tiller provided? Can't that shit be litigated in court? Hasn't it been? This particular slice of the internet is about whether Bill O'Reilly wants to man up and accept the fact that his inflammatory rhetoric may have contributed to the man's murder.

By making this a discussion about what Tiller legally did, you're honoring the killer's motive and giving it validity.

@Mediahohoho: I'll bite. Who cares why? Let's wrench it back around. The fact is, Bill O'Reilly is a hatemonger and a bigot and a bully. He's got no ethics, no spine, and he lies the way other people breathe. I have to wonder at that last part. Have you seen "Outfoxed"? O'Liely claims he's never told a guest to 'shut up' but of course there's video of countless incidents where he does just that. He called Dr. Tiller "Tiller the baby killer" repeatedly, then when nailed for it, he didn't admit he'd done it himself--dozens of times. He's a gutless wonder who can't handle any heat, much less his idealogical cousin, Rush Limbaugh.

@Ginmar Rienne: The Big Lie is at the crux of the Fox News editorial plan: lie, lie, and then when you're through lying, lie some more.

The point is, this is not a debate about late-term abortions. It's about murder. I don't think the people turning this into a Roe v Wade symposium would have any patience for a discussion of US military adventurism in the Muslim world when discussing that asshole who killed the recruiter last week, nor should they.

That they turn every discussion of the vicious murder of George Tiller into an examination of his, the victim's, ethics, is further proof that they themselves have swallowed the big lie.

Meanwhile, I saw O'Reilly and Beck yesterday congratulating themselves on being completely blameless for the violence they cheerlead--guilty consciences are really fucking obvious on some people.

I think the gun seller analogy is good but not quite on. Recruiting people for the military is a complete legal activity that leads to the death, and in many cases, murder of innocents, most of them on post-gestational human beings. Scott Roeder deserves no different treatment than Abdul Hakim Mujahid Muhammad.

the comments for this post - and the responses to some comments - reveal something that i find very, very sad. there was only one comment in this entire thread that i thought genuinely sounded like a request for more information about an opposing viewpoint. shutting people down in argument is not an effective technique for anything other than maintaining the status quo.

i hate that the abortion "discussion" always already devolves into a pile-on, with the position on top (heh) depending on the venue of the argument.

Yeah, sometimes, when I lie in bed at night, I wish I was girl, just so I could have an abortion. Just like Mr. Garrison. It sounds like it would be so much fun, especially if I could do it at around 8.5 months into the pregnancy. [le sigh]

A couple of things. First, Gawker only made available the second half of the interview. Walsh actually comes off pretty bad in the first:

    http://www.foxnews.com/video/index.html?playerId=videolandingpage&streamingFormat=FLASH&referralObject=5945521&referralPlaylistId=949437d0db05ed5f5b9954dc049d70...

Second, I don't see where O'Reilly got "crushed" or "got his ass handed to him" by Walsh. Because she mentioned Jim David Adkisson? Ridiculous. Scott Roeder, the suspect in Dr. Tiller's murder, is mentally disturbed and has a long history of antiabortion and antigovernment behavior predating the O'Reilly Factor. There's no reason to believe Bill O'Reilly had anything to do with his actions. So Walsh is being incredibly deceitful in using the Adkisson church shooting to make the false point that he has "blood on his hands" in the Tiller murder.

The fact that the guy was mentally disturbed and had a history of antiabortion behavior doesn't absolve O'Reilly from blame in the least. The guy was crazy and hated abortion, and O'Reilly went on TV and said "Look! This guy kills babies! This guy right here!"

Would Roeder have known about this doctor without O'Reilly singling him out and calling him a killer? Would he have been incited to murder if O'Reilly hadn't called Tiller a killer?

@AlbertaLibra: So is your argument that because Walsh called Tiller a hero she has more blood on her hands than O'Reilly does? When O'Reilly is the person calling for action, calling Tiller a baby-murderer on his show, trying to incite the masses?

How about this, go back to fox dot com, and comfort yourself with the knowledge that you're among friends again.

@MisterHippity: Actually, yes, I think it's quite likely Roeder knew about Tiller from other sources. Tiller has long been notorious as the operator of one of the few clinics in the entire country to perform late-term abortions, and as such, was targeted by the pro-life fringes well before O'Reilly first mentioned on the air in 2005: remember, Tiller's clinic was bombed back in 1986 and he was first shot in 1993.

And given Roeder's association with some of the country's most nutbar Christian Identity ideologies, it's entirely possible he had little love for a Catholic and putative nonracist like O'Reilly, if the he even gave the guy any thought at all. (This is all courtesy of Wikipedia, btw.)

That said, even if O'Reilly's statements weren't the specific trigger to this crime--even if all they amounted to was a kind of ambient ill-will floating around the nation's conversation about abortion--they were still despicable.
