I can't believe how powerful Lieberman has become in this debate, and I'm glad Franken shut him up in accordance with Robert's Rules of Order. He had his time. It sounds like every senator will get his or her time. Lieberman loves this way too much, and it was time for him to yield.

Then again, this is the only two minutes I saw of this thing, so maybe I'm completely out of line.

@Hiroine Protagonist: McCain's loyalty to Liberman predates his turncoat... ism, and I don't doubt it played it's part. But I respect McCain enough to think that he meant what he said. I come from a country where there is next to no civility whatsoever inside parliament, and it's a total drag on the entire quality of government. One of the things I like about the American political system is precisely the 'comity' to which McCain refers. So as much as I can sympathise with Franken's frustration, I can also sympathise with McCain's point.

@Hiroine Protagonist: Australian. And yeah they obviously need to stay within time limits, but an extra minute when asked for should be granted, I think. To whatever extent goodwill can be fostered between parties during such an important debate, I think it ought to be. The alternative will be interpreted as negative point scoring, blurring the lines even further between personal rivalries and public outcomes. I doubt Franken would have been so dismissive of someone with whom he agreed, for example.

@Benny: Dear Benny: your "civil" John McCain notoriously shrieked for another Senator to "Go fuck yourself!" on the august Senate floor a few years ago. The Republicans are attempting to hijack the current proceedings ruthlessly and smirkingly- they are actively at war .

Franken was perfectly civil, and was well in his rights to object to Lieberman's droning on past his fair share of time. Franken was actually instructed to do this- they still had many other senators to hear from, and it was uncivil of Lieberman to behave like the selfish pig that he is.
Hothead McCain is the least civil politician there is, unless you think calling your wife a "cunt" is an endearment.

"During a meeting Thursday on immigration legislation, McCain and Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) got into a shouting match when Cornyn started voicing concerns about the number of judicial appeals that illegal immigrants could receive, according to multiple sources -- both Democrats and Republicans -- who heard firsthand accounts of the exchange from lawmakers who were in the room.

At a bipartisan gathering in an ornate meeting room just off the Senate floor, McCain complained that Cornyn was raising petty objections to a compromise plan being worked out between Senate Republicans and Democrats and the White House. He used a curse word associated with chickens and accused Cornyn of raising the issue just to torpedo a deal.

Things got really heated when Cornyn accused McCain of being too busy campaigning for president to take part in the negotiations, which have gone on for months behind closed doors. "Wait a second here," Cornyn said to McCain. "I've been sitting in here for all of these negotiations and you just parachute in here on the last day. You're out of line."

McCain, a former Navy pilot, then used language more accustomed to sailors (not to mention the current vice president, who made news a few years back after a verbal encounter with Sen. Patrick Leahy of Vermont).

"[Expletive] you! I know more about this than anyone else in the room," shouted McCain at Cornyn.

@Baroness: Your point stands only in as much as it was uncivil of him to say that. However, it was in a heated discussion during a meeting after he himself had been insulted, which is a different context altogether to what we're talking about. Nothing like the Senate floor.

Regardless, you're right. There are several examples of McCain's temper getting the better of him. However, the point he makes in the clip above is not undermined in the slightest by his own track record, in my opinion. It more than stands on it's own.

As an aside, Cornyn's parachute quip was kinda clever. Offensive and a low blow, but clever.

@Lysergic Asset: The answer is IOKIYAR. Honestly, hearing the members of the GOP complaining about Democrats being impolite is revolting. Lest we forget, for eight long years, they attempted to run this country completely into the ground. Any objections from the Democratic members of Congress during that time were ignored. I appreciate the point being made about the gentility of the Senate, but Franken responded politely to a request. It was a matter of his discretion as to whether or not to allow Lieberman (I-Quisling) to continue to speak. Nothing to see here, move along...and methinks Senator McCain doth protest too much.
