I remember John Leonard when he came to The Nation to serve as Literary Editor with his wife. He was an anachronism, launched by Bill Buckley and his lefty credentials were regarded -- at least among the interns -- with suspicion. I remember passing by his office once, late in the afternoon, as he was smoking a cigar, door closed, looking absolutely in exstasy. I imagine this must have been a holdover habit from his days running with the conservatives. But it was such a strange image, blissfully materialistic, nestled in the lefty offices of the Nation's old offices on Fifth Avenue. That is how I remembered him when I read the news.

May he rest in peace.

I love Leonard - one of my favourite writers. Actually this is a bad week for the TV writers as Time OUt New York's TV editor died as well.

So sad to hear this. His reviews were one of my favorite parts of "CBS Sunday Morning." They were so beautiful, so intelligently crafted, I always felt a little smarter for having heard him, and I felt they same way when I discovered his writing.

My word. Only 69? Damn! I remember watching him on Sunday Morning back when Charles Kuralt was still alive -- he always had a manner of speaking that was forthright and lyrical, and his vocabulary was so extensive. He seemed to carve sentences out the air. He will be missed.
