Great news. Just cause the NBC 10pm weeknight schedule is locked up due to that corny-ass utterly directionless show, other people shouldn't suffer.

In all honesty, Jay Leno's show is probably good once a week--and that's all it should appear. #southland

Watched a couple episodes and thought it was decent, but I'm more impressed with TNT for rising up against this NBC Leno thing. Should one station's obsession with that repurposed hack, be everyone's failure? I think not. And obviously TNT agrees. Good on them. #southland

Excellent. I hope the show eats Leno's lunch (If Sons of Anarchy can beat him in the key demo [gawker.com] this should, too).
Question: Since TNT and the show's producers, Warner Bros., are Time-Warner corporate siblings, does this increase the chances of there being a second season? What did they used to call that . . . synergy?

@naugahydeinplainsight: Very much so. Also, they don't have to score as many viewers to do well on TNT.
So happy about this, I find the show and characters quite compelling. #southland

Damn you Leno, and damn you NBC. I am still bitter that Life got canned, and now this. 30 Rock is probably the only show that I watch on that network now. NBC, you are terrible.

You know, in times like this when something really unexplainable, i.e. Leno's show, has been decided by a small group of people -- one can only surmise that it's the cover of an elaborate drug deal :[]

Wouldn't every evening at 7 p.m. be a better slot for this Leno dreck than the heavy-hitter, news-lead-in slot at 9? Watching Leon at 9 (Chicago time) is like washing down a good meal (sometimes) with YooHoo.

If you scan the comments here, it is literally 0% support of Leno -- I know we're special peoples here and all :[] but that has to somewhat mirror the sentiment of the entire TV watching population save for the oldes.

NBC has to take notice of the retarded failure of this show. Find the Pee Wee interview clip on Hulu and watch the last 3 minutes of it for the quintessential example of how beyond idiotic, unfunny, and nonsensical that show is.

Yep, saving money in the short term by producing nothing for no audience is a winning strategy.

Some other network will pick this up, the way CBS snagged Medium. Or maybe NBCU will grow a spine and at least put it on USA, like L&O: Jeff Goldblum.

"Southland, which was set to roll out October 23, will be replaced by Dateline NBC for the foreseeable future. That's right, because news is cheap and "To Catch a Predator" is never gritty—or gripping."

You know, I've worked in the TV biz for many years, and in that time I've seen some pretty bone-headed maneuvers from network executives. It is a truism that they're fantastically dimwitted bunch.

That said, I'm still kind of shocked at the idiocy of giving Jay Leno, wholesale, a bloc of NBC's historically strongest time-slots.

What kind of moronic calculus drove this decision? Sure, hour-long dramas are expensive to produce, but you get home video and syndication back-end, plus now online revenue. A daily talk/variety-show has no resale value, at all.

I expect they will, eventually, come to their senses on this one. But by that time they'll have dug themselves so deep into a hole, and at such a crucial time in the TV business in terms of market presence, I don't know that they'll be able to get back out.

@sarrible: If it was a sponsorship issue I could see it, but prestige (like you get with a solid drama) produces a desirable demographic skew, which means a better sponsorship base, which means higher ad rates. I just don't see that Leno has that demographic potential. Of course, there are the branded content portions of the show, but really, how much do you think they're selling that stuff for now that the initial ratings bump has vanished?
